» Momcurry - Can anyone help?

Hi, My name is Cheryl and my son Tommy is a 3rd grader and he has a science fair project to do this semester. He is very much into dinosaurs and is curious as to why they died out. We wanted to create a project that based on the Asteroid Theory would recreate this as his project. So, basically we need to recreate an asteroid hitting the earth, causing a large dust cloud and blocking out the sunlight. He is our idea: using a plastic (clear) bowl/dome we would drill a hole for a tube. The dome would have some sort of powder or flour that would create a big enough dust cloud to block out the sun (a light source outside of the dome). We will need some sort of ball or the like to be the meteorite that will have enough mass travel fast enough and to hit hard enough to create the dust cloud. Can you help us figure something out and make any suggestions? Need to get this going asap! Thanks in advance.

Cheryl,

What about a golf ball? That or a bearing are the only things I can think of. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Oh, or a large marble? Give those a try.
