» Renie_Burghardt - Preparing Your Garden for Planting!

Hi Victoria, lots of good advice in this article. Yes, the wood ashes are great for the garden, but the deer are another story. However, I'm determined to try to have a garden. In fact, I have already planted lettuce, and the couple of rows of potatoes, for new potatoes, are going in this week. Someone gave me a formula for keeping deer at bay. Hang strips of rags all around the garden, doused with Lysol! They swear it keeps them away, so we shall see.

I love this time of the year, don't you? I enjoyed the article, as always, and hope this message finds you well, Victoria. See you next time.

Warmly,

Renie

Thanks for visiting and reading my article. I must admit, spring is the most wonderful time of year for me, too--I simply adore the transformation of everything outside. My tulip shoots aren't dead yet--so I'm happy about that!

My tabby cat, Sissy, is pregnant! I was wondering why she was so starving hungry these days--but however many kittens she has, is fine with me--we have too many mice around here, so they can spend their lives as farm cats. Of course, I'll have to get them all fixed! If I didn't, I'd be sending the kittens down to you, Renie!

The chickens have been laying now for quite a number of weeks. I get one aracana egg and three brown RIR eggs per day--so I'm not complaining! Life is just great right now!

All the best,

Victoria

Ahhh!! Farm life. How I long for the days of spring on the farm. It is a time of rebirth. Everything is being planted and growing, the chickens are nesting, calves, piglets and lambs are being born and all is right with the world.

I would love to have a couple of deer around here. I am too far into the city for that. I do see a doe with her fawns occassionally when driving on the outskirts. She crosses the road at twilight everyday once she has given birth.

Here in southern Ontario, we can't plant much before the 24th of May because until after that time there is a chance of frost. The crocus are up, my Iris has been poking their leaves through the soil for about a month now. I'm surprised they haven't been frosted but they are in a corner near the house so possibly that protects them.

Thursday was a beautiful spring day. We awoke yesterday to find it had snowed all night and it is still snowing. A fine, wet snow that makes the roads hazardous. We have only accumulated about 2 inches because the snow is so fine. Thank goodness. If it had been those big fluffy flakes we would have been digging out by now.

Take care Victoria. I hope spring arrives in your mountains soon. You are lucky to live in the mountains. I would love to.

Thanks for dropping by my topic and leaving such nice comments. I look forward to visiting with you again in the near future.

Hi, Mary!

Thanks for dropping by--it's good to hear from you again.

You have fond memories of your childhood on the farm, don't you! It's a lifestyle you don't soon forget. I love the life and have always wanted it, ever since I can remember.

I, too, woke up to snow this morning--and there looks like there's plenty more to come! It's pretty, though--just hope my bulbs will be ok--when I checked on them outside yesterday they were all coming up. One of my dogs developed a taste for the emerging heads, and nipped the tops of some of them.

Anyway, hope to hear from you again, soon.

Victoria

PS: Did you get paid yet?

Victoria, I do have many fond memories of growing up on the farm in rural Ontario and wouldn't want it any other way. I would love to be able to live on a farm. It is a part of me and I yearn for it.

We are still getting snow. Thank goodness it is very fine and no big fluffy flakes. We have about 4 to 6 inches now and it is still snowing. It hasn't let up since Thurday night.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and thanks so much for visiting my topic. I really enjoyed your comments on my article.

Hi, Mary!

Our snow storm was brief, and didn't affect my bulbs. It's all gone now and today is pretty nice--they say it will be 64 degrees! Still really cold at night, though, and woodstoves are still required!

I am to be building my strawbale addition this spring, also a root cellar and am going to be planting a nice garden and expanding it. I'm going to make use of those tires I have lying around in the yard, and make mini raised beds out of them. They'll come in handy. We also have to put in new guttering this year and a better catchment system. As you can see--my warm weather activities are stacking up! There's probably too many things to get done!

Thanks for visiting--always appreciated!

Kind regards,

Victoria

Victoria - great ideas here. Rural life is so peaceful and fun, but work, too.

And Renie, I have to laugh. We have done so many things to get rid of the deer - as you know I finally decided to just co-exist. But they don't like rhodys or daffodils and we built a fence around our berry and veggie garden - the only way. Let me know how the lysol does; you'll have a clean-smelling garden, anyway!
