» Girter - Which shoes for me?

In late January my local running store owner noticed that my right foot was overpronating. I did have some pain in my right hip after runs of 5 miles or more, so when he suggested stability shoes I was more than happy to give them a try. Mind you that to this point in my life, (I am 30 years old) I had had no knee pain. I ran two times in those stability shoes (about 5 miles) and my left knee began to ache and stiffen. I called him about it and he assured me that it could not have been because of the shoes and that all runners have little nagging pains from time to time. I believed him and took a few days off. That Saturday I ran in a 5k. I felt pretty good during the run but about 20 minutes after the race my knee began to stiffen and it was very painful to bend. For the next 3 months I could not run. At times, I could barely walk. After much research I am convinced that it was my IT band causing the pain. After a regiment of ibuprofen and stretching I am once again running (in cushioned shoes!!). I have worked myself up to long distances over the past month and am once again experiencing hip pain. I believe this is because of the overpronating on my right side. I would like to correct this but I dare not ever put a stability shoe on my left foot again. I am hoping someone will have some advice for me. Maybe an insert for my right shoe or something. I appreciate any and all advice on this matter. Thank you,

David Lockhart

» larry56 - Pronateing on the right foot

I'am coming up to 72 years. I have always been heavy on the right leg foot but it was always the heel that would wear down, but over the last three years it as moved to front of the shoe, to the right.I have some shoes that are five months old, there is almost no wear on the left shoe. The right shoe is smooth at the front. The chiropractor was a waste of time. One orthapedic, guy, told me I was right leged, the other said he had'nd seen it before. Anyway, does anybody know any exercises there must be muscle groups that controls the way the foot hits the ground.I have just purchased some support shoes. anybody got any sugestions.

I have had the same problem, which my running chiropractor fixed for me. She said the problem is that I have built up my hip flexors (front of hip) through running and they are no longer balanced enough to hold my pronation in check. The result for me was hip pain first, and then knee pain after a while. She recommended weight lifting, specifically the two machines at the gym that you push out and in with your knees. I seldom get to the gym, so I lift ankle weights while lying on my side with knees bent and (separately) squeeze a bouncy ball between my knees. These two things, plus some myofacial massage, cleared up the pain really quickly.
