I do indeed meet a lot of interesting people at weekend races. You should go ahead and try running the 5 k that you mentioned. Just don't run beyond your training base. Your base of 15-20 miles per week is enough to allow you to do the shorter distance runs of a 5k or one mile or 3 mile events. I'm glad you bought a heart monitor.
