I enjoyed reading this article about PF, and was wondering if you could write another editorial in the future pertaining to IT Band injuries, and how to prevent them. Also, it would be helpful to know how long to expect to have to recover from them, and what to do in the meantime.

Thanks,

» Lynn - Thank you for your comments on the article. To answer your quest

Thank you for your comments on the article. To answer your questions, the IT band, or iliobtibial band syndrome (ITB)
injury will indeed be covered in an article in the not too distant future. Look for my article on it in the second or third week in March.
As to the question of how long it takes to recover from ITB or Plantar fasciitis, it all depends on how severe the injury is and what type of training regime you have.
I am not the type of person who ever wants to hear "no exercise" so I always look for a possible alternative to my training rather than stopping. I find for both of these injuries the overall best way to continue training is to go to water running. You can expect to not lose any conditioning while you continue "running" in the water. I do not like water running very much but it's better than not training at all. Your muscles have time to heal and your heart stays conditioned as well as your endurance level remaining constant.
Another alternative for the P.F. injury is biking. Stationary or outside. This relieves the stress on the heel and if you follow the suggestions in the article you should see improvement fairly quickly. You should test the recovery of the foot by trying short runs and see how you feel.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions anytime. Thanks, Lynn Seely

» lisa6 - Plantar Fascitis

Hi

I was an aerobic addict. I then developed pain under the 1st metatarsal of my left foot. That was two years ago, since then I have tried may treatments including orthotics with no success. I have now developed plantar fascitis in my left foot (heel). Is it possible that the pain in the front of my foot is related to the plantar fascitis. If so, how can I treat it? I am desperate for an answer to this ongoing pain.

Thanx

lisa6

Hi Lisa. Thanks for asking but I don't feel qualified to answer. It is vital you get to a specialist so they can examine your foot and even take x-rays if they think it is needed.
Trust me, it is worth it to get a definate answer.

In the mean time, you may get some relief by taping the arch of the foot, but keep in mind that is only until you get to a doctor.

Hope you get better!

» mabbott - injury to foot-think it might be plantar fasciitis

have had an injury to foot for awhile-went to see a couple of doctors-last doctor was foot doctor-he prescribed inflamantory pills-said it looked to be a little inflamed around ankle-went to see about getting some good walking shoes which I did but while there the specialist at the shoe store suggested i might have plantar fasciitis and described to me how it felt-i think he is right-i bought a pair of insoles he suggested and they seem to help-it has gotten better but has not gotten well-guess it takes time- it has only been about a month since i began wearing the insoles-is there anything you can add to help me?
