Hi Lynn! As we all know, when you go running (or any physical activity for that matter) you should keep yourself well hydrated. I usually drink water while running and then finish off with some fruit juice.

What does everyone else drink? I also drink sports drinks (PowerAid) now and then. What do you consider the "best" drinks during and after?

Thanks.

Hi Dean. I believe that it is important to take in fluids about every 15- 20 minutes while exercising, however, having said that, I must confess that on my training runs that last only 30 or 45 minutes, I do usually wait until I get home before drinking water or sports drinks. As for what to drink, that depends on what you are actually doing, how intense you are exercising. During a race event, I always get water at the water stations set up to give runners water during the race. I still have trouble drinking on the run, but have found out that if I pinch the paper cup almost closed, I only splash part of it on myself! I firmly believe in drinking a small amount of sports drink about 30 minutes before a race, but that is my personal choice. The most important thing is to be sure to drink a sports drink or something like that after a race because of all the electrolytes you lose through sweating during an intense run. My favorite sports drink is Performance, which is made in a powder form by Shaklee. It mixes easily, and I'm impressed with the ingredients. But if I run out, or need to drink a sports drink and don't have it with me I will use whatever is at a race. My thinking is that Performance is the best, but any sports drink is better that none. By the way, fruit juice is also a great way to replinsh carbs and most of the electrolytes. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Lynn,

Normally when I run, I have a fruit juice or a sports drink before I go and then stop at the fountains along the way. I don't like taking a drink with me while I run because it just feels weird to hold something or have it strapped on me. And the fountains in the park are spaced at about 10 to 15 minutes apart.

I like PowerAid because it tastes pretty good and I haven't gotten around to trying anything else. Maybe I should.
