Cold Weather Running

» dean - Lynn, What do you recommend for running in the colder weather Lynn,What do you recommend for running in the colder weather? Up until now, I have been running in a t-shirt and shorts. Its getting cooler now, but I still get warm while running and work up a pretty good sweat. I would like to keep running in the winter if it doesn't rain/snow, but I don't want to leave myself open to catch a cold. Any thoughts? TIA Dean Minamimaye -- posted by dean » Lynn - Hi Dean. Thanks for your question. As for running in the fall, I Hi Dean. Thanks for your question. As for running in the fall, I usually run in a shirt, jacket and shorts.(Sometimes I also use a runners headband to cover the ears). As I warm up I take the jacket off and tie it around my waist without having to stop as I do it. That seems to work fairly well and if for some reason the weather turns colder while I'm out, I have the ability to put the jacket back on. I should add that it is a jacket made for runners so it is light weight and easy to tie and keeps me quite warm.As for running in the extreme cold of winter, you really do need to invest in the right running apparel for your safety. You can suffer frost bite without realizing it pretty quickly. It is important to wear layers of clothing, but it must be the right type of layers! Or you could get into trouble. I run during the coldest part of the winter outside and never have had a problem being too cold. What I had to do was invest in a running hat, a running suit ( jacket/ long pants) and the right socks. Plus the garments worn against your skin should be able to wick away the moisture so you stay dry. If you want to collect all the info about your choices in exactly what is the right clothing to wear, check out "Road Runners Sports" which I have listed as one of my top 5 sites. Also, here is the toll free phone number you can call for specific advice. 1-800-551-5558. Ask for their free catalog to be sent to you. That way you can browse through what they offer for cold weather running. Hope this helps! Enjoy your running! -- posted by Lynn » dean - Thanks for the info Lynn. I just hope the weather stays dry. I Thanks for the info Lynn. I just hope the weather stays dry. I don't mind running in the cold, but I can't stand running in the rain. Sorta bad since I live in Vancouver. Thanks again. Dean Minamimaye -- posted by dean » Lynn - Dean, glad to help. You may want to consider a treadmill so that Dean, glad to help. You may want to consider a treadmill so that you can continue to run during the wet/cold weather. Before you actually buy one though, I'd suggest you find a health club in your area that has one and set up an appt to be shown around. Usually that will include being able to try their equipment out. (treadmill) Have a short run on one and see if you might like it.Or, you may want to join a health club just during the winter months. The rates vary greatly but most offer reasonable rates if it is mainly a fitness center. Also, some have indoor tracks. If they do be sure it isn't too small where you may become injured due to always turning on the same side/ same foot. If they change direction on the track every 15 or 20 minutes it should be safe. (this is usually done via a small traffic light). Also find out what type of surface the track is made of. It should have some cushioning in it to lessen the impact on your body. I don't really like running inside, but it is better than not running at all. Hope this helps. -- posted by Lynn » dean - Lynn, Well, I don't think that I will be getting a treadmill Lynn,Well, I don't think that I will be getting a treadmill anytime soon. I don't like running in a stationary position. One of the joys of running is being able to see the scenery go by. As for a gym with an indoor track, I would love to find one. I think there are a few in town, but I've never gotten around to looking for them. I've seen the ads on TV about some really nice ones in Seattle, but they don't have a Bally's in BC. Thanks for the info. Maybe it won't rain too much this year. Yeah right. Dean Minamimaye -- posted by dean
