» Joy Butler - Sephie

Wendy, I really enjoyed reading this and I think Chelsea would be proud of you. Sephie needed you and, whether you knew it or not, you probably needed her. I'm so happy for you both. Some of my beloved pets are ones I never picked, they just happened.

Hi,
Your article had me in tears. You see, I have a Dukaroo. Dukaroo is my glue to the earth. I first met him when I passed by a neighbour who had him tied to a tree while he clenaed his van. It was a wednesday and he had got the dog on Saturday and had only given him one walk. I quickly begged off walking this dog and that quickly escalated to two walks a day with my neighbour letting me have a spare key.
I am on disability so although wanting a dog I really don't have the disposable income that I thought I would need. Anyway, after having the dog for a month my neighbour decided he wasn't getting anything oput of him. Of course by this time I had fallen in love and the Dog was responding to some basic training in regards to walking etc. To make a long story short I got the dog sold to me for a dollar and the amazing Dukaroo became mine in July 2001. After having Dukaroo for about two weeks my neighbour stopped and talked to me and said "I Hope you know what you are doing with a Dog like that, He needs a couple of good shots to the head a day to let him know whose boss!" This a55h0le was punching Dukaroo regularly! I was able to track down Dukaroo's background to when he was found as an abused stray and given a microchip,.and his age was guessed a four. That had been August2000 and I was his fourth owner in that year.
When Dukaroo first came to live with me He had nightmares regularly inwhich he would yelp and whimper. He also had what I can only equate with night terrors....He would let out a screaming yelp and then continue highpitched yelping while still sleeping! I was by my baby boys side in a shot and I just held him and soothed him while he shook and then he would fall back into more relaxed breathing and be asleep.
When I first started walking duke he was submissive but afraid. When he moved in with me I was able to develop trust with him. An aquaitence from the dog park who has Akitaas (sp?) has admired the work I have done with Duke and many people can't believe that I haven't had him since a puppy with the way jhe responds to me. A couple of things about Dukaroo are that he still cowers oand/or gets frightened when he hears bad or bad dog. I use the term don't be RUDE or that's RUDE. and he goes into a sit or goes and lays down depending on whether he is nuzzleing for treats or just being a pest.
Dukaroo is the best thing to ever happen to me. I am on diability my self for a traumatic past that caught up with me. I struggle with hoplessness and hae attempted suicide twice, both with circumstances that should have been successful except for supernatural intervention. When I said that Dukaroo is my glue to the Earth, he gives me a reason to be here. When I tracked down his history he has a bite on his record so the Humane society has let me know that if there is ever an incident he will be gone. The bite incident was investigated by police and the man was drunk and insisted, even giving a wtritten statement to the effect that he accidently stepped on Dukaroos tail. He has a VERY short nub! That was one of the homes that Dukaroo was removed frombecause of abuse, Apparently someone put the reason in his file as that he kept running away so he was adopted out to a person who then met up with my neighbour. Knowing that if I wasn't around to take care of Duke that he might not be able to be around either is very powerful! My doctor's have seen a change in me since having Dukaroo and have told me that he is the best therapy for me. I think one of the reasons that Dukaroo and I have bonded so well is that he and I get to spend most of every 24 hours together.
I have been able to manage with the finances. Admitedly my credit card debt has increased due to things wlike vetr bills. But I make sure I purchase Dukaroo's food first and then I go to the foodbank if I need to. Some of my other neighbour's have grown to love Dukaroo as well. He has dressed up fopr the past two halloweens (once as a hula girl and then as Krypto aka Super dog) He is very protective of children. I maintain a dressup box for local kids and inadvertantly we discovered that Dukaroo likes to wear costumes too! (What a goof!) I don't have the means to get a picture onto the internet but when I do I will share my treasured companion with you.
Thankyou for letting me share.
