The Rimadyl ControversyRead the article this discussion is about

» WMSmith - Rimadyl - my personal take I tried to be balanced in the article. However, in my own life, I decided that in the case of my late Chelsea, the drug wasn't worth the risk. At that time, my vet didn't seem to know about the potential for side effects (this was shortly after the Senior Dog Project first began posting testimonials and before new warnings had even been added to the drug's packaging). It turned out to be the one time that we had a disagreement about her treatment.I decided to save Rimadyl as an absolute last resort and tried the natural alternative of glucosomine instead. Glucosamine takes a little time to kick in, but we had great results with her on that, and the Rimadyl question never had to come up again. Now that I know more about the drug, I'm glad that I was so cautious. Chelsea had a lot of health problems in her life and some of the medication that she had to occationally take was hard on the liver. Rimadyl would have probably been like gas on a fire. Plus, I'm such a pet hypochondriac that if she was on Rimadyl, every time she sneezed I would have thought she was having a toxic reaction. -- posted by WMSmith » gonecountry - Re: Rimadyl - my personal take In response to Rimadyl - my personal take posted by WMSmith:We took our Sheltie, Buddy to bneutureded on July 7 and picked him up on July 8 and was instructed to give him half a pill on July 9th. He seemed fine on on July 8 and 9. On Sunday, July 10 he just wanted to lay around and we just thought that he just wanted to rest. He would drink water, but had no appetite. On morning of Mon, July 11 at 2 am, he passed away. Had we know more about this drug, we would have not given it to him. We feel that the vet should have given us more information about this medication. Buddy would still be with us had we known all the facts. -- posted by gonecountry

That is so tragic and I'm so sorry for your loss. Do you know for certain it was Rimadyl or could something else have caused his death? -- posted by Joy Butler » WMSmith - Re: Re: Rimadyl - my personal take In response to Re: Rimadyl - my personal take posted by gonecountry:Oh my gosh, that is so horrible. I am so sorry for you loss. You might want to consider contacting Phizer, especially since it is so recent. The Senior Dog Project website that I talk about in the article has some excellent information and a support network. I highly recommend checking into the. That just hurts my heart to hear about your dog. God Bless. -- posted by WMSmith » Christine5 - Re: Re: Rimadyl - my personal take In response to Re: Re: Rimadyl - my personal take posted by WMSmith:I just wanted to let you know that Rimadyl is not only dangerous to dogs, but also to parrots. It has been used (and still is) to treat parrots with devastating consequences. It is not even licensed for avian use, but the vets resort to the 'cascade' procedure as set out by the RCVS. However in the following link the cockatoo in question was not suffering from arthritis or any post operative pain, or any other symptom referred to in Pfizer's data sheet. Therefore the use of RImadyl did not even meet the criteria for the 'cascade' procedure to be used. Please read the following link and further click to the petition to add your signature to the list, to ensure that vets are brought to justice and that the RCVS take responsibility and punish their members (the vets) when they have been found to be wrong. http://www.ckcbirds.co.uk/Rimadyl.htm -- posted by Christine5
