My Rottie is Sick
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 3 Next » » WMSmith - Re: Please help In response to Please help posted by River909:My advice is take her to a vet as soon as possible. No one over the internet can diagnose a problem with any degree of certainty. Take to a vet for a hands on exam. Good luck to you and I hope she feels better. -- posted by WMSmith » StrmDncr - Re: Re: Please help In response to Re: Please help posted by WMSmith:http://www.chetbacon.com/wobblers.htm -- posted by StrmDncr » rotts4ever - Re: Re: Re: my rotti is sick In response to Re: Re: my rotti is sick posted by cody8:I found out last week my 8 year olrottieie also has Wobblers. We returned from a 4 day Christmas vacation to find her totally paralyzed in the rear legs and immediately got her to my vet. (She was being cared for by a friend who said she had walked slowly in the morning but she had thought she was okay). My vet immediately gave her a IV of cortisone and started her on a regime of 4 cortisone pills per day. I had thought I was going to have to put her down as she couldn't walk at all in the rear and was 'knuckling under' her front paws. Two days later she was walking a little 'drunk' looking, and now five days later is almost back to her normal gate prior to the onset. She goes back to the vet this Wednesday where he will assess her progress and decide whether or not we can decrease the cortisone a little. I have read up on the disease, it is a progressive disease, the cortisone won't save her, but she may get along for a year or so on it...only time will tell. The vet feels she is probably not a candidate for surgery (she would have to see a specialist Neurosurgeon) due to her age. I love her to death as I am sure you do yours, I hope your rottie is doing better. I hope she proves your vet wrong and does well on the cortizone for longer than imagined. -- posted by WMSmith » Rth23 - Re: Please help In response to Please help posted by River909:Did you find out what was wrong with your Rotti? We have just got Rotti and he is 10 months old, he seems fit enough when we are out walking etc, bounds around but he's off his food and he lies around all day - doesn't seem happy - looks sad. His coat is shiny and he enjoys being fussed could he just be home sick?? -- posted by Rth23

When you say you just got your dog, do you mean like yesterday or last week or a month ago? There is usually an adjustment period. Even with two of my terriers who already knew me as a volunteer at the shelter, we went through an adjustment period of about a week, when they came home with me and did not eat much and did not want to let me out of their sight. It was such a change in environment from what they had known. Your dog is probably missing his other home, the people, maybe other dogs, and routine he is used to, and maybe you are feeding him different food than he is used to. It's easy to wonder if you did the right thing in adopting them but if homesickness is the case, he will come around. As long as he seems healthy otherwise, I would give him a week or so and if he still seems "not right", then have him checked by a vet. -- posted by Joy Butler » Rth23 - Re: Re: Re: Please help In response to Re: Re: Please help posted by JButler:Thanks Joy, You're right he is coming round, we had only had him for just over a week when I posted my message. I was just a concerned mother I think!! We definitely did the right thing getting him we all love him to bits. He's a spoilt little or should I say big boy - within reason of course!! -- posted by Rth23 » WMSmith - Re: Re: Re: Re: Please help In response to Re: Re: Re: Please help posted by Rth23:Rth23, sorry it's taken so long to get back with you. I'm glad your Rottie is doing better and I hope he still is. He's lucky to have someone who cares so much about him. I hope he's settled in well. Good Luck! -- posted by WMSmith » Rth23 - Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Please help In response to Re: Re: Re: Re: Please help posted by WMSmith:He's great. . .eating well and being a selective deafness teenager! LOL He's feeling a little sorry for himself at the moment, as he has just had his 'bits' removed, hopefully we've done the right thing. Thanks for your response. -- posted by Rth23 « Previous 1 2 3 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
