» Adriela_Sakamoto - How does your garden grow? What are your favorite climbing roses and/or vining, twining, clinging things? Spouses and small children do not count.-- posted by Adriela_Sakamoto » WilliamG - As far as Climbers go Dortmund and my Noisettes ... I do love my Dortmund that I am training to a triangular column, as well as my Swamp Rose and my Noisettes (Champney's Pink Cluster and Jaune Desprez) are wonderful climbing type roses or at least could be trained as climbers. The Swamp rose is a species once bloomer but a real trooper! The noisettes are new to the garden (less than 1 year) and yet have still done very well and are nearly thornless. The Dortmund has gotten huge and produces large clusters of red blooms but you need chainmail gloves to work with this rose as the canes are VERY thorny. I have a couple of miniature climbers that I will probably put into the ground and give them "a chance to expand". Both will probably improve their vigor once taken out of the pots. These are Red Cascade and 'Jeanne La Joie'.-- posted by WilliamG » CarolWallace - New Dawn It's still my favorite. But surprisingly, it was my Alba Meideland which suddenly decided to turn into a climber and clamber through the branches of my purple smoke tree. I've always wanted to grow a rose through a tree - but a shrub rose??? -- posted by CarolWallace » Adriela_Sakamoto - My Own.. New Dawn is right up there on my own list, probably the top if I had a top. Climbing iceberg is one I've never tried, and the one in my garden is in its second season, and is threatening the New Dawn for favorite, I think. It's gone completely crazy. There is an old school here, with a very tall chainlink around probably two blocks of playing fields, upon which grows New Dawn and an unknown red I plan to liberate of a branch or two if I can talk my husband into driving the getaway car. The roses are absolutely huge, having grown there since who knows when, and the display is stunning. I don't advocate rustling as a rule, but so many of the older buildings are often just razed and the plantings lost forever. I figure with the 20 or so of each variety, they can spare a foot or so of cane. Rationalization? You bet it is.-- posted by Adriela_Sakamoto » WilliamG - Your just helping with their pruning chores Adriela ... So there should be no problem with your taking a few cuttings from those roses. If they happen to root and grow for you, so much the better [VBG]. Shoot! Here in Texas we have a whole group whose purpose is presevering those old roses, and the groups name is "Texas Rose Rustlers"-- posted by WilliamG » Adriela_Sakamoto - Yeah.. I keep thinking that one day I'm going to go over there and some jerk will have cut them all down be cause they drop petals all over the pavement. I know the rustlers are pretty famous, but don't they discourage downright rustling these days? I heard a rumor to that effect. Meanwhile.. I'll just keep thinking.."Pruning, I'm helping with the pruning.."-- posted by Adriela_Sakamoto
