» CarolWallace - Same tastes

It sounds like you and I have similar tastes in planting. I surrounded my old garden roses with artemisia, garlic chives, rue and lavender. The garlic chives because of aphids, the rue, lavender and artemisia because not only do they look like ferny foliage in a giant bouquet, but because the scent seems to deter deer and other hungry critters.

» Adriela_Sakamoto - Ahhh.. lavender

I had to leave two lovely clumps of Hidcote (?) lavender at the old house, but I'd forgotten how much I adored seeing the blue spikes in front of the Graham Thomas, and over beside an Iceberg. Thank you, Carol, for reminding me of another plant I *have* to have.

» WilliamG - I strongly agree with use of companion plants.

And I am not the only one. Michael Shoup in his books as well as others who have written about landscaping with roses have advocated companion plants. In many cases it expands on the theme of flowers in the garden and compliments in color and texture. That and in many cases the companion plant helps the roses. I have planted chives and other alliums with my roses which repell certain pests. I also have salvia mixed with my roses and marigolds, daylilies, and other beauties. As a matter of fact I don't have any beds which are only roses. I am an advocate of companion plants. The queen needs her court and they don't have to be other roses. Another advantage to companion plants is that for some of my once bloomers that allows the companion to bloom and add color to the bed during the rest of the seasons.
