In response to message posted by Treeman:
I think the Neem oil suggestion is porobably the way to go - Mark always recommended Neem oil products for rose problems so it must be quite safe for them.

It sounds like you may have thrips. One remedy is Orthene spray. Let me do a bit of research though and perhaps I can come up with a more in-depth answer. I know that among the articles in this topic Mark did do one on thrips and buds that won't open if you care to browse while I research.

» Rosedud - Dying Roses in Central Texas

I have a problem I can find nowhere. I am contributing each year to Jackson & Perkins and others only to have all or most rose plants die. I live in zone 8/9 at the edge of the Texas Hill Country. We have very alkaline soil, which I have amended in beds and pots with peat moss, top soil, and potting soil. I plant plants as deep as our limestone will allow. EAch year roses start out well, occasionally having bouts with thrips, mildew, spider mites, etc. But the real problem, which I can find no reference to is leaves turning brown from the bottom up, drying up and the whole plant dying. Even in amended soil, there is good drainage. I usually water at the soil line in the morning. I sometimes think they are just burning up. Our average temp this time of the year is between 95 and 99 degrees F. There is very little rain, at least a month now.
Any suggestions?? I have a combination of hybrid, rugosa, climbers, and tea roses.

» alynch1 - Rose Bush Leaves Yellowing & Falling Off

I live in Atlanta, GA (zone 7). I have 4 rose bushes planted close together. On one all the leaves have turned yellow and fallen off. At the same time it continues to have new growth and produce flowers. What's wrong with it?

I have the exact same problem. (I'm in San Francisco, Zone 8, I believe). My first thought was that the blooms are getting wet, then rotting from the inside, but I don't think that's really it. I've kept the blossoms pretty dry, and still no luck. The plant grows beautifully, with lots of strong canes and promising buds -- just no fully developed flowers.

Did you find out anything else?

» Elaine_Stephens - URG!!! My Roses are dying!!!

I have a whole backyard full of roses. I'm very new to the whole gardening idea, but love it. At the beginning of this year I was in the back yard and noticed that my plants and roses and fruit trees were covered in snails. My roses also were COVERED in aphids. So I got the snail poison, got the spay for my roses and went to work. I think I've gotten rid of all the unwanted bugs but my roses have really suffered. Some of the leaves are yellow with black spots. the flowers are not the right color and most of them die before they bloom fully. Help!

In response to message posted by Elaine_Stephens:
Most likely your roses are stressed, both from the aphids and the onslaught of chemicals you doused them with. Some types of roses really don't deal well with any but the most natural and gentle of controls. If you have any of the old fashioned heirloom roses this may be part of the problem. Hybrid teas will tolerate chemical warfare.

Black spot - pick of all those leaves and discard them. Don't allow them to remain in the soil as that will simply transmit the problem to the soil and reinfect the plant.

Are they pruned so as to get good air circulation? lack of air circulation often contributes to black spot. In early spring I always remove any ded canes, any smaller than the thickness of a pencil, and any that head toward the center of the plant or that cross another branch - leaving only fairly mature, outward heading canes. This allows air to circulate through the branches and helps prevent the black spots you mention.

Your roses may be dying before blooming because of damage already done by the aphids, but if they prodice fat buds that simply never open you've got bud balling. Some types of roses are susceptible to it - my Abraham Darby and Fair Biance are notorious for that, especially in high humidity.

» ola121 - Red bugs on my rose bush

I have some red bugs bunched up on my rose bushes that do not look like aphids. I live in southern North Carolina. I've been researching this online for about an hour now but can't find a picture of the nasty things. They kind of look like red stink bugs and they bunch up on the stems. After they are done, the stems look like they've had all of the green sucked out. I haven't tried any kind of pest control yet because I don't know what they are.

Thanks for your help

» kedzucat - Red bugs on my rose bush

If your bugs are the same as mine, they are nymph boxelder bugs. The adults are black and red and the babies are bright red. What I have read on them the do not pose a threat to most plants but are more of a nuisance bug. They can cluster on buildings like they did on my neighbors garage. Kind of creepy looking. Good luck.
