Awesome article, Lynne. =) Great information about the story behind the story. I didn't know most of that. What do you suppose she'd think of the sequel written by Alexandra Ripley?? No way of knowing, of course.

» Lynne_Remick - SCARLET, THE SEQUEL : Undoubtedly Disappointing

Unfortunately, I personally do not think that Alexandra Ripley (an accomplished author in her own right), did any justice to Margaret Mitchell's original characters. Somehow, she failed to capture the essence and spirit of Gone With the Wind, and although the sequel "Scarlett" provided an interesting premise for a story, it fell flat next to Gone With the Wind.

I would love to hear about what others think of these two books in comparison.

Lynne,

This definitely was a fascinating article. It's always interesting to read the background behind an author you are currently reading. I remember watching a biography of Margaret Mitchell quite a few years ago but had forgotten a lot about her. I found the inspiration for the character Rhett Butler to be the most fascinating tidbit. Imagine basing a hero on someone who abused you!

Sorry I can't comment on 'Scarlett'. I haven't read it yet, but have heard it does not compare. Many people were disappointed, though I've read mixed reviews.

Yes, Kathy---I remember that movie but missed it. Unfortunately, although facts about the move can be found through Internet searches, there are no copies available in any mediums.

I do hope that they replay it on television some day!

Gone with the wind has been my favourite movie since the first time I watched it and I was nervous at reading the book "Scarlett", but I couldn't put it down. Perhaps it doesn't have the power of GWTW because it doesn't have the backdrop of the Civil War, but the main characters of Scarlett and Rhett come through. I read the whole thing in two days! It is also the only book ever that I have read more than once.

I haven't seen the screen version of this book, but I know that I never shall because the actors who were chosen to play the parts were, in my mind, completely wrong. Anyone who watches "Scarlett" as opposed to reading it, will feel very cheated.

I didn't feel cheated at all with "Scarlett" the book - in fact, I felt elated at having the issues resolved.

Great article Lynne (as ever!) - I learned a lot about Margaret Mitchell that I never knew.

I'm probably going to regret this later, but I'm drawing a deep breath and going on. =) I didn't read either book, but I've watched both movies over and over. I know that movies, not even 1939 versions, never really capture the whole essence of a book. It's impossible to get it all into a two or even 4 hour segment. I liked the movie Scarlett, I think because of my Ireland bias. The scenery was beautiful. Although I was appalled when I heard Timothy Dalton would play the part of Rhett, I was pleasantly shocked at how well he pulled it off. I think the actress who played Scarlett (I know her name, just don't know how to spell it so I'm going to "save face" and not try.) did a great acting job, but she just wasn't Scarlett. I've always thought that Delta Burke, minus some pounds, would have played an awesome Scarlett. In Designing Women, anyhow, she had the looks, the accent, and the attitude. =)

Back to Scarlett...If you think of it as a totally separate story, it's a good movie. Can't talk about the book, unfortunately, because I haven't read it.

» Lynne_Remick - Scarlet Conversations

Since I have only seen the movie and NOT read the book, after reading Katie's post, I think I will give the book a try--after all I do have my very own hardcover copy!

Lianne--the actress is a British actress named Joanne Whalley-Kilmer (she married and divorced Val Kilmer after having two children with him!!)

I don't know what it is that makes me dislike the movie---perhaps because I am faithful to Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. Perhaps I would have liked the movie if the characters had their own names and it didn't profess to be a sequel to gone with the wind. I just felt that "next to" Vivian and Clark, the *sequel* actors were very limp. It is interesting to see so many opinion on this, though smile!

Looking forward to seeing what more of you have to say!

Wow! Lots of ideas on this... I read Gone with the Wind in three days. I love the book and love the movie, appreciating each of them in their own right. I think that's what you have to do with Scarlett. Appreciate it for what it is...although I happen to think no book could ever compare to Margaret Mitchells!

I read the book and then watch the movie and I did feel cheated because the movie was nothing like book especially the endings where no where near a like.
