» boxsterboy - Costume Party!

What is it about the Harry Potter books that draws so many people in? It's a richly woven fantasy with genuine characters. It's Star Trek without a technological excuse for miracles and magic.

Have fun with the Harry Potter theme! Throw a costume party! We did: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumInde...

Hi Sharon!

I agree with you that the indescribably "weirdness" of Harry Potter is one of the best parts about it. Thanks for posting!

Hi everyone!
I just joined this site and was absolutely delighted to find other HP fans!
Did you know that HP is now being used by psychiatrists to help victims of abuse and suffering? Harry is a great source of inspiration and hope...as well as being fantastic stories too!
If you want to find out what I and other fans think of Harry et al, please check out this site:
www.geocities.com/lumen_dei and follow the link to "what the fans have to say". Mine is on page 4 by the way!!
There are some excellent postings there.

As for the Star Trek link...you got it!! In fact, I wrote an article for a Star Trek magazine a few years ago in a similar to the one I've just done about Harry...spooky!

I'm about to check out your link....so off I go....

» botscharow - Fundamentals think Harry Potter promotes Satansim!!!!

I do a daily free Internet marketing newsletter. Recently I ran an ad for some Harry Potter posters. Here's the reaction from one of my subscribers and my response to it. your comments would be appreciated.

===Start of Reader's email=====

Subject: Harry Potter

You recently forwarded some information about Harry Potter through 3r-marketing. You may be interested in the following article by Roger Lynn.
God Bless

This is the most evil thing I have laid my eyes on in 10 years ... and no one seems to understand this threat. The Harry Potter books are THE NUMBER ONE selling children's books in the nation today. Just look at any Barns & Noble and Walden books storefront. Go to Amazone.com and read the reviews. Hear the touting by educators and even Christian teachers about how
"It's great to see the youth so eagerly embracing the reading experience!"

Harry Potter is the creation of a former UK English teacher who promotes witchcraft and Satanism. Harry is a 13-year-old 'wizard'. Her creation openly blasphemes Jesus and God and promotes sorcery, seeking revenge upon anyone who upsets them by giving you examples (even the sources with authors and titles) of spells, rituals, and demonic powers. I think the problem is that parents have not reviewed the material. The name seems harmless enough ... Harry Potter.

But that is where it all ends. Let me give you a few quotes from some of the influenced readers themselves:
1. "The Harry Potter books are cool, 'cause they teach you all about magic and how you can use it to control people and get revenge on your enemies,"
said Hartland, 10 years old. Craig Nowell, a recent convert to the New Satanic Order Of the Black Circle: "I want to learn the Cruciatus Curse, to make my muggle science teacher suffer for giving me a D." [A 'muggle' is an unbeliever of magic.]

2. Or how about the really young and innocent impressionable mind of a 6 year old when asked about her favourite character: "Hermione is my
favourite, because she's smart and has a kitty," said Jessica Lehman of Easley, S C. "Jesus died because He was weak and stupid."

3. And here is dear Ashley, a 9 year old, the typical average age reader of Harry Potter: "I used to believe in what they taught us at Sunday school," said Ashley, conjuring up an ancient spell to summon Cerebus, the three-headed hound of hell. "But the Harry Potter books showed me that magic is real, something I can learn and use right now, and that the Bible is nothing but boring lies."

DOES THIS GET YOUR ATTENTION!! If not, how about a quote from a High Priest of Satanism: "Harry is an absolute godsend to our cause," said High Priest Egan of the First Church of Satan in Salem, MA. "An organisation like ours thrives on new blood - no pun intended- and we've had more applicants than we can handle lately. And, of course, practically all of them are virgins,
which is gravy." [Since 1995, open applicants to Satan worship has increased from around 100 000 to now ... 14 MILLION children and young
adults.]

It makes me physically ill, people! But, I think I can offer you an explanation of why this is happening. Children have been bombarded with
action, adventure, thrills and scares to the point Hollywood can produce nothing new to give them the next 'high'. Parents have neglected to see what their children are reading and doing, and simply seem satisfied that Little Johnny is interested in reading.' AND educators and the NEA are PUSHING this with NO WARNING as to the effects or the contents.

Still not convinced? I will leave you with something to let you make up your own mind. And finally, a quote from the author herself, J. K. Rowling, describing the objections of Christian reviewers to her writings:
"I think it's absolute rubbish to protest children's books on the grounds that they are luring children to Satan," Rowling told a London Times reporter in a July 17 interview. "People should be praising them for that! These books guide children to an understanding that the weak, idiotic Son Of God is a living hoax who will be humiliated when the rain of fire comes, while we, his faithful servants, laugh and cavort in victory."

My hope is that you will see fit to become involved in getting the word out about this garbage. Please forward to every pastor, teacher and parent you know. This author has now published FOUR BOOKS in less than 2 years of this
'encyclopaedia of Satanism' and is surely going to write more.

I also ask all Christians to please pray for this lost woman's soul. Pray also for the Holy Spirit to work in the young minds of those who are reading this garbage that they may be delivered from its harm.

Lastly, pray for all parents to grow closer to their children and that a bond of sharing thoughts and spiritual intimacy will grow between them.

In service to the Lord Jesus, His honour and glory.

Roger Lynn

Col. 2:"8 "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to Christ."

2 Thess. 9-12 " ... the coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs and lying wonders, and with all
unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusions, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL.

Dear All,
We need to ask the Lord to intervene on behalf of young minds which are being influenced. The comments both by the author and a satanic priest
should give us cause for prayer. May you be blessed

My Response:

Thank you for sending me Mr. Lynn's article. I assume you share his opinions. I do not. So you might find what follows somewhat "offensive." It is not meant to be that. It is merely my own position on the subject. I hope you can read it with charity.

I found this article to be, excuse the bluntness, extremely ridiculous. This person obviously has not read ANY of the Harry Potter books because he does not know what he is talking about. Have either of you read any of these books?

The Harry Potter books do deal with magic and yes, there is some "black" magic in it, but as the villain. The "magic" that Harry Potter performs is "white" magic and the author makes that quite clear. Yes, I have read the first book. at my daughter's urging, because she knows I love good swords and sorcery fiction.

Mr. Lynn's theology is also somewhat warped. And yes, I think I am qualified to make that statement. I have a Master's Degree from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. I quit one year's credits short of a Ph.D. in Theology. This is NOT a denominational degree, but rather an academic one, so I, unlike Mr. Lynn, have no personal ax to grind.

I also have a BA in Anthropology with a specialization in the study of non-Western religions, which includes those regions that practice "magic" in the sense that Mr. Lynn uses the word. I can provide you with lots of scholarly citations, including some very prestigious theologians, to support my statements, if you wish.

His knowledge of what constitutes magic is also somewhat distorted by his prejudices. A hundred years ago a computer would have been considered magic and if the Internet is not magic, then what is?

By most reasonable definitions of magic, Jesus was a very powerful white magician. Possibly the most powerful ever.

Finally, Mr. Lynn's Sculptural interpretation, as all his arguments, is colored by his prejudices. Jesus's injunctions that Mr. Lynn interprets as categorical injunctions against all magic, are not such. They are injunctions against what is now commonly referred to as "black" magic or Satanism.

All denominations practice some form of Christian "white" magic. Prayer is a form of magic. So are any of the Sacraments that a particular denomination chooses to practice. Ordination, especially in those denominations that believe in and practice apostolic succession, is very high magic.

I seriously urge you to READ Harry Potter and judge for yourself. Blind obedience to any "guru," whether marketing or religious, is not a good idea. God gave us intelligence to make our own decisions about whether something is good or bad.

I hope this does not cause you offense. It certainly was not meant to. If it does, and you wish to unsubscribe, your request will be honored immediately.

Best regards,
