» FortBrooke1824 - Stolen election of 1876? Well written article, however i beg to differ somewhat. As, i travel a lot and am in Mississippi at this time i can say that i have seen forged ballots and misleading ballots. As most people know the blacks did not have the luxury of education as the whites did. Many of the black voters could not read. I believe also that many black voters did not understand the current issues at hand during the election. However, their vote is just as important as any other vote. The republican ballot had a picture of Hays and Lincoln, Hoping that the un-educated black voter could recognize Lincolns picture and thus vote republican. When i see Lincolns face next to Tilden i have to cry foul! The majority of the voters in Oregon went for Hays and Hays should have carried all electoral votes. Mississippi, La, and SC also should have gone to Hays. These last 3 states were huge in black people as anyone from Mississippi will tell you. I do concede however that Florida was stolen from the Democrats. It clearly in my opinion should have gone for Tilden. However, when you add up the electoral votes as i have done one would see Hays winning the election. Does anyone know if they counted pregnant chads? lol great site-- posted by FortBrooke1824 » Mugwump53 - Re: Stolen election of 1876? In response to message posted by FortBrooke1824:It is agreed by historians that both sides did much that was unethicalk and illegal during the campaign of 1876. Indeed, the entire period from the Civil War to the Progressive Era was noted for corruption and graft. Regardless of who cheated more, the final decision came down to a deal made to favor the majority party in Congress. If you agree that even one state was stolen from Tilden, then the entire election was stolen, remembering that Hayes won by just one electoral vote. Hayes had to win every one of the twenty disputed votes. If he had lost Florida, as even you say he should have, then the election would have gone to Tilden. This is an election that continues to be disputed. Always fun to explore this one. -- posted by Mugwump53
