» Mugwump53 - Presidential Trivia Question #83
Nine times in our history, a Vice President has taken the presidential oath of office due to the death or resignation of the elected President. Usually, the oath has been administered by the highest judicial official available at the moment. Three times, however, the Chief Justice of the United States was available. Which three of these nine Vice Presidents had their initial presidential oath of office administered by the Chief Justice of the United States? (This does not include oaths "re-administered" later.)-- posted by Mugwump53

The answer is: 1) Andrew Johnson was sworn into office following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase administered the oath.
2) Harry S Truman was sworn into office following the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt on April 12, 1945. Chief Justice Harlan Stone administered the oath.
3) Gerald R Ford was sworn into office following the resignation of Richard Milhous Nixon on August 9, 1974. Chief Justice Warren Burger administered the oath.
Thank you for the compliment. You have no idea...but you really made my day. I just found out I have to have surgery AGAIN next month. Your kind words really perked me up.

In response to message posted by ossining:I am really sorry to hear that you will need surgery again. You are getting into a really nasty habit with all this surgery, and you ought to think about trying to break it. Seriously, I hope you are feeling well (as well as possible under the circumstances) and that all goes well next month. Please keep us informed.
