Merry Christmas, John! You are a recipient of the The Christmas Gift Exchange and with good reason. As Jerri and I have stated many times, you make history come alive. It's always a treat to visit -- to read your articles or participate in your trivia contests. Your articles are fascinating and insightful -- I always learn something new. I thoroughly enjoyed this article about Dawes.
Thank you!!!
Merry Christmas,
Tina

What a great idea! Thanks so much. You really made my day. And the article you picked is one of my all-time favorites. I had a lot of fun writing that one.

Thanks again. I am going to send a few gift exchanges of my own as soon as I figure out how to embed the link in a discussion message.

Hope you are having a great holiday season.

» jerrib - Excitement it was!

Such a colorful tale. I feel like I'm watching The West Wing, only a much more interesting version. Another colorful figure brought to life, John. Enjoy your writing so much. And thanks, Tina, for letting us enjoy this colorful tale with your Merry Christmas gift!

Happy Holidays to you!

» Mugwump53 - The Midnight Ride of Charlie Dawes

Thanks again Tina and Jerri. You two always lift my spirits.

The article Tina picked for her thoughtful gift was one of the ones I enjoyed writing the most. Tina's selection made me want to research a little more. I found a more complete version of the poem read into the Congressional Record. It is a parody of the poem "Sheridan's Ride"

Hurrah, Hurrah for Dawes!
Hurrah! Hurrah for this high minded man!
And when his statue is raised on high,
Uner the dome of the Capitol sky,
The great senatorial temple of fame ----
There with the glorious general's name
Be it said, in letters both bold and bright,
"Oh, Hell an' Maria, he has lost us the fight."

I will keep looking to see if this is the entire poem, or if I can find the complete version. I thought you might like to hear this fuller version.

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays to your both!

» EDawes - Family History

Great to learn detailed history of my ancestors. His descendant, my father, Gerald E. Dawes, is a prominent writer with a fondness for Europe and foreign issues, particularly Spain. I have never seen a picture of Charles Dawes before now and there is a striking resemblance between himself and my father. Did not know before now that he was known as "Hell and Maria" Dawes, but I find it interesting that my sisters name is Maria.

Interesting story and a good read!

Hi, EDawes. It's great to have you here. I am glad you enjoyed the article on your ancestor. He was quite a guy.

If you have any more information about your famous ancestor, and if it is not too personal, please share it with us. He made "Hell and Maria!" a popular exclamation in its day, and he was certainly one of our more colorful Vice Presidents.

Welcome to PResidents & First Ladies here on Suite 101. I hope you come by often.
