PRESIDENTIAL FEUDS, PART IIIRead the article this discussion is about

» Tina_Coruth - Now I remember! Hi John,When I read your preview last week, it slipped my mind that Taft was the president who wanted to serve on the Supreme Court instead of being President! I didn't know that Taft asked Major Butt to help resolve the feud and that he died on the Titanic. That's very interesting. Did Roosevelt know why Butt was on the Titanic? Fascinating article - I'm off to read part 2! -- posted by Tina_Coruth » Mugwump53 - Re: Now I remember! In response to message posted by Tina_Coruth:Another interesting question (but then I have learned to expect that from you). I don't remember reading anywhere that Teddy Roosevelt knew why Butt was returning, but with all the publicity received by the sinking, and some front page articles about Major Butt after his death, I can't believe Teddy didn't know. I, too, wonder what his reaction must have been. It never came up during the campaign, to the best of my knowledge. I will do some more reading. Thanks for stopping by, and thanks as always for your fascinating insights and questions. -- posted by Mugwump53 » H2O - Nomination Conventions sure were colorful and active in days past! Too bad we don't have more action today. Now the nomination is sewed up well in advance, no more marathon, multi-rounds of balloting where a little-known such as Lincoln in 1860 can come out of nowhere and take the nomination.Did Tommy Nast draw a "Bull Moose" cartoon to go along with the donkey and elephant? -- posted by H2O » Mugwump53 - Re: Nomination Conventions In response to message posted by H2O:Hi H2O. You are right about conventions not being nearly so interesting in modern times. But on the other hand, letting nominees be chosen in primaries rather than by political bosses at the convention seems more democratic. Still, not nearly as much fun. Intersting question about Nast and the Bull Moose. I was about to answer it when I decided to look it up first. As I thought, Nast died before the Bull Moose campaign of 1912. He died in December 1902, while serving as minister to Edcuador. Thanks for your insights and question. Glad you are participating actively. Glad to have you here. -- posted by Mugwump53
