» Mugwump53 - Family Secrets It would be fascinating if your husband was a member of the Conkling clan. I have some interesting stories about Roscoe Conkling. Why don't you check with him and let us know? Thanks for letting me know you liked the article. Always glad to hear your comments. -- posted by Mugwump53 » jerrib - One of his great uncles In response to message posted by Mugwump53:told my husband his family is related to the Conklings - but he was too young to appreciate the info and now it's lost(uncle died, nobody kept the info). Guess when I get real serious I will do more research. Didn't know he was a gangster! That makes it more fun! Jerri -- posted by jerrib » Mugwump53 - Gangster? Who was a gangster? The uncle or Roscoe Conkling? I would not characterize Roscoe as a gangster. Corrupt, yes. Almost all politicians were at that time, and Conkling was merely the best of the bunch at it.Let me know if you find out anything more. This is really interesting. -- posted by Mugwump53 » ossining - Levi P. Morton I enjoyed your article about Levi P. Morton (1824-1920), so I could not resist telling you this story.13 1/2 years ago, my wife and I were driving through Rhinebeck, NY. We were on our honeymoon. It was our first full day of married life. As we were driving, I said to her: "Rhinebeck, NY, that's the hometown of President Benjamin Harrison's Vice-President, let's go and find his grave." To which my dutiful wife replied: "Can't we have breakfast first?" Sure enough, we found the cemetery, woke up the caretaker (on a Sunday morning, 9am), and she said: "You're the first people ever to ask to see Vice-President Morton's grave." PS -- In case you're wondering, my wife and I are still married. -- posted by ossining » Mugwump53 - Impressive! I don't know which is more impressive, that you are still married or that you knew where the grave of Vice President Morton was! Thanks for sharing that personal story with us. Please tell your wife, who must be a great sport, that my wife knows exactly how she feels! Thanks for posting. Please join us often. Always gald to have another enthusiast with us. -- posted by Mugwump53 » ossining - Re: Impressive! In response to message posted by Mugwump53: Thank you for the compliments! Another memorable line from our wedding, my wife said that by marrying me, she was becoming the only legally married polygamist in the United States, by marrying me she was also marrying ALL the 40 presidents. -- posted by ossining
