» Mugwump53 - Presidential Trivia Question #8

Since John Adams first moved into the White House, three Presidents have been forced to live elsewhere. Who were they and why did they have to find other lodgings?

I will try to answer this one 1 at a time, and hope others will beat me to the other ones.

Madison, British were arsonists.

Yup. Madison moved out because the British attended a fire sale. One down, two to go.

I believe Truman stayed in a hotel for a while when the White House was undergoing some renovations. I seem to recall this in conjunction with an assasination attempt or conspiracy.

I'm only going on a hazy memory here so I could be way off base.

» Mugwump53 - Correct Answer

You got it! Harry Truman stayed in the Blair House, the official government guest house acroos the street from the White House, while the White House unwent two years or more of renovations. And you are also right that it was here that the Puerto Rican Nationalists attempted to assassinate Truman.

I'll give you the third one, since it might be considered a trick answer. James Monroe also lived elsewhere, because it took a while to fix the White House after the British burned it during Madison's term.

Good job!
