» packerjo - Lemonade Lucy Webb Hayes

She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan Women's College in 1850. The school is in Delaware, Ohio. She was the first "First Lady". She aquired the title courtesy of Mary Clemmer Ames, a reporter who called her "the first lady of the land" in an account of President Hayes's inauguration. The working press liked the sound of it better than "Presidentess" and attached the name to not only Mrs. Hayes but also her White House successors.

Also, she banned liquor from the Executive Mansion and she started the White House Easter Egg roll.

I am from Ohio. So, I am proud of that. Hayes's birthplace is now a gas station in Delaware.

» Mugwump53 - Correct Answer

Yes, Clint. It was Mrs. John Quincy Adams. He met her while serving as Minister to the Court of St. James (England). Good job, as always.

Sorry I didn't answer you sooner. I was away at an educational conference. Hopefully, I got some education.

A really good question. I don't know this one off the top of my head, so I will have to look it up.

» Mugwump53 - First Annual White House Thanksgiving Dinner

I am not sure if this is the right answer, but the tradition of sparing the White House Turkey began in 1947, so I will assume it was for the first White House Thanksgiving Dinner. Therefore, I will say Bess Truman.

Actually it was earlier than that.

» Mugwump53 - Got it!

The person who started the tradition was Sarah Polk, wife of James K. Polk, in 1849. she was not known for her entertaining, having banned drinking and dancing, and refusing to serve food at public gatherings at the White House.

In spite of that, the Polks were popular, mainly because of the lively conversation and warmth of their gatherings.

Although there may have been interruptions in the annual chain, the custom started with her. A local Washington paper wrote this:

"The President had some friends to dinner --- This new idea of a Thanksgiving in Washington was well observed and gave such general satisfaction as to lead to the deduction that it will be an annual custom hereafter."

A pulication of the White House Historical Association lists this as the start of the custom.

Another great question. Thanks.

» StateOFranklin - Great Job (as usual)

You are correct sir it was Ms. Polk. Even at home in Colubia TN she was not much of a social being.
