Okay, I think you have finally stumped me. Off the top of my head, I can think of several that come close.

Dolley Madison's son by her first marriage, John Payne Todd, died of typhus (I think) but not for many years after James Madison left the White House. I think it was somewhere around 1852.

Andrew Johnson's son Robert died about a month after Andrew left the White House, but he died of alcoholism or related problems.

Abraham Lincoln's son Tad died, but I think it was Tuberculosis not typhus, in 1871.

So, I am stumped. If Ossining, or one of the other experts here doesn't get it soon, I will have to do some research.

I am looking forward to learning this answer!

John,

A hint. This was the First Lady's second son. Her first son died when he was three days old. I'm not sure what he succumbed to though.

You are correct, MugWumpclassPet, about Frank dying, but he died before Franklin was president. The question asked for a son who died a year after the president retired. Pierce retired in 1857, so we are looking for a son who died of typhus around 1858.

John,

You are correct. Frank died before Franklin was president. However, MugWumpclassPet is also correct. Though she had the wrong son, the answer is the same. Jane Means Appleton Pierce's second son died of typhus the year after the President retired.

I think you may be incorrect on this one. The Pierce's had one living son, Bennie, before Franklin was elected President. Bennie, aged 11 I believe, died in February 1853, a month before Franklin's inauguration, in a freak train accident. They were on their way to Boston for some last shopping before moving to Washington. the train jumped the tracks, and several cars rolled down an embankment. There were no serious injuries other than Bennie, whose head was crushed in by a falling piece of luggage. The Pierce's were childless during and after the time in the White House.

John,

After doing more research on the subject, I must concede that you are right. The son died the year after Franklin retired as a US Senator. My source was wrong. I apologize.
