» sudrumguy - Idea This is something we did last night at TerraNova, and this was after I had already written this article. Our worship band played the song "God of Wonders" and part of the song is "God of Wonders beyond our galaxy." In the background, on our two screens, we played the opening of the movie "Contact" in which there's an amazing fly-through the galaxy sequence. -- posted by sudrumguy » sudrumguy - true? i wonder how true your statement is nationwide. I say this because I come from a fairly traditional Protestant (ahem...boring) background.I'm curious as to what you've seen and heard over the last few years...the ways in which you've seen church become more "fun," though that's possibly a bad term. Saying "more customer friendly" sounds almost as bad, though, from what I hear and some things I've read, there seems to be a lot of churches that get their leadership (and other) strategies from the business world. now that's a whole other topic... -- posted by sudrumguy » metamorphasis - The power of an image in ones mind Shatkti Gawain wrote a new age best seller called creative Visualization. I haven't read it but have seen it many times. In psychology classes I have studied the experiments involving the power of creating the image in ones mind. Probably the most famous (sorry I don't have links or names) invovled groups of students and shooting basket ball hoops. One group practised. one group didn't practise but visualised themselves making hoop shots and a third teset group changed nothing. The group that visualized making the shots had improvement that equalled or surpssed that of the group that actually practised. Neat huh? Well, back to where and how this can fit into church. I have actually witnessed this at a service and had to laugh to myself that the Pastor would have a hemorage if he knew that what he was doing was creative visualization. At the end of a sermon, in which it was encouraging people to do some sort of good work, he asked everyone to close their eyes, picture who they would like to do that thing for and then picture themselves doing it. Turns out that the next week when the pastor asked who did it there was greater follow through than had ever occurred before. The minister didn't contuinue the interactive approach because of some complaints from members of airey fairy stuff. Must be a tough job trying to keep everyone happy when you are a minister. I know I couldn't handle the stress.-- posted by metamorphasis » Craig93 - Re: The power of an image in ones mind In response to message posted by metamorphasis:Unfortuantly we get so frightened of the new age we tend to throw it all out. There is nothing new under the sun, and satan cannot create new stuff, he can only subtly change the truth to suit his own purposes. There is much garbage in the newage that as Christians we shouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. However much of what they do has Biblical origens that they have taken ownership of. while I don't think it would be a good thing for the church to do every week, to do occasionally I've no problems with it, and it could be OK to do in private devotional time, but we need to make the distinction of using it in prayer and allowing God to direct our thoughts and dreams and truly submitting it to him. As for my self, the scriptures say that God will speak to us in dreams and visions - I am one who does have dreams and visions and many are prophetic messages from God- though I know I must submit them to the Lord to avoid deception. If God has put a burden on us to do something then by all means let's visualise ourselves doing it. craig -- posted by Craig93
