In response to message posted by plox:

Sen. Edwards riding on Air Force one means nothing. Its common practice for members of Congress to ride on governmental aircraft if they are going that way anyway. When Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, he rode several times with President Clinton.

Perhaps Mondale could run again! Or maybe Jimmy Carter or George McGovern.

» BuckyRea - Democratic Nomination

I'm not "sold early" on any of the candidates that I've seen so far. I do think it's a little silly to say (as one poster in this thread has said) that if the Dems avoid nominating a Southerner it will expand our chances of making a nation-wide appeal.

The last non-Southerner to win an election for president was in 1984--Ronald Reagan, whose electoral base was in the South anyway. Before that you have to go to 1972 to find a non-Southerner getting elected president. The list of non-Dixie presidential nominees for the last three decades is, except for Reagan, a list of losers (Dole, Dukakis, Mondale, Ford).

I'm no Southern partisan, but I don't think blatant regional prejudices do our party any good.

The possible candidacy of Wesley Clark is intriguing, but I can't escape the feeling that he's really running for Secretary of Defense or Vice President in the next Democratic administration.

Bucky, my silly suggestion was a reaction to all that has been said about cowboys from Texas, and the way "neo-con", which used to mean neo-conservative, is being shifted to mean neo-Confederacy.
Agreed, it would be really hard for a New England Liberal to get many votes where I live.

While I am now a Democrat, I still LIKE John McCain, lol.
Did you hear what he said about all the sneaked-in riders attached to the war budget? Which are keeping it from being passed quickly.

I also like Richard Gephart, except he hurt his chances with me over his Confederate Flag statement. I am sure that it won't help him much in the south should he get the nomination.

My personal preference would be to see John F Kerry of Massachusetts run as President, with either Dick Gephardt of Missouri or General Wes Clark of Arkansas, and if Gephardt, put Clark in as Secretary of Defense/State

I still think Kerry is as competent a choice as any, but don't think he has a chance of winning. That hound dog face of his just doesn't stir enthusiasm.

Kerry is a quality candidate, but I still think the Democrats best hope is in Wesley Clark. The Republicans can't get the best of him with defense and national security, typically weak issues for Democrats.
