Your first point: I don't like Bennett because he used the media to personally attack Clinton... Well, please explain how this is anything out of the ordinary. How else do you criticize or "attack" a public figure, but by the media? I suppose you could send anonymous hate mail, but I think we'd agree that would definitely be out-of-bounds. Bennett's use of the media to criticize Clinton is fully within the appropriate bounds of democratic discourse. This complaint of yours simply has no merit whatsoever. It just sounds to me like you don't care for people that attack leaders of your party. That's hardly a formidable argument. Your second point: ...and at the same time making a name for himself With all due respect, this is a ridiculous statement to make. Bennett already HAD made a name for himself, long before Clinton came along. He didn't need Bill Clinton to advance his name, reputation, standing in the party, or anything of the sort. I find this charge laughable. Your third point: He used the Clinton affair to advance his own personal carrear First, it's "career," not "carrear." :-) Sorry, I'm now a teacher. Can't help myself. Frankly, this charge falls into the 'ridiculous' camp much like the former one. Your accusation would have SOME merit if you said Bennett used Clinton's scandalous lifestyle to sell books. That may be true, but I would counter that Bennett was already a bestselling author long before Clinton came along. Nevertheless, there is absolutely ZERO merit to the charge that Bennett used Clinton to advance his (Bennett's) career. What else can Bennett possibly do in his career that he hasn't already done -- other than run for President himself? You're talking about a guy who has served as a respected college professor, head of the National Endowment of the Humanities, Secretary of Education, and as White House "Drug Czar." Since then, he's gone on to make a ton of money giving speeches, writing books, serving on organizational boards, etc. -- all of it largely INDEPENDENT of Bill Clinton's "affair" with Monica Lewinsky. Bill Bennett has a long and accomplished public career in his own right. He didn't need Clinton to help it along. You're reaching for straws if you attempt to argue otherwise. -- posted by Brian Tubbs
