Fort Atkinson was the first fort west of the Missouri River, it was the location for the firstschool, first farming, first library. the Fort was the result of the Yellowstone Expedition that began from Plattsburgh, N.Y. with the 6th
U.S. Infantry under command of Colonel Henry Atkinson. They joined the Rifle Regiment at St.
Louis to continue up the Missouri River.
