http://detnews.com/2001/editorial/0110/1... How anyone could say America is "carpet bombing" Afghanistan is unbelievable to me. It's outrageous, not to mention offensive to the American pilots risking their lives to do just the type of bombing ("target bombing") that Jackson says should be done. -- posted by Brian Tubbs » vemartin - Re: Jackson: U.S. "carpet bombing" Afghanistan In response to message posted by BrianTubbs:Brian, Actually B-52’s were used to “carpet-bomb” suspected terrorist training camps in the Afgan interior, during the early days of the war. The Pentagon has shown pictures of the before and after damage. However, far more target bombing with “smart-weapons” has been done in order to minimize collateral damage and civilian deaths. Jess Jackson is a bit off course in this one. And for the record, I do not usually endorse Jesse Jackson in any way, shape, or form; I find his views and causes self serving and counter productive. I do not consider him a “Black” leader; he lost my support and respect in the 1994 election when he referred to New York as hymietown, speaking of course of the large numbers of Jews that live there. I do not endorse racism and bigotry, no matter what the source. And just as Louis Farrakhan does not speck for the vast majority of the estimated 2 million Black Muslims in America, Jerry Falwell does not speak for the vast majority Christians in America, Jesse Jackson does not speak with one voice for Black Americans. His views are his own. Vincent E. Martin -- posted by vemartin

I agree with everything you've said. You are correct that the U.S. has carpet-bombed selected areas, but Jackson's comments implied we were primarily engaged in carpet-bombing, and doing so throughout the entire region. For that, as you've said, he's "off course" (though I'd say more than a "bit.") I also concur that Jesse Jackson is primarily about Jesse Jackson. The way he's shaken down corporations for financial donations to his empire proves that. -- posted by Brian Tubbs
