North America is wasting indecent amounts of capital overseas for one simple reason. The public opinion in the U.S. and Canada right now holds that it is virtuous to give the undeserved. It is commonly believed that to give something that is deserved (i.e., a fair trade of services) is simply just. Virtue is believed to be present only in kindness over and above such actions. It is because of ideologies like this(and not just from foreign aid), that Canada and the United States are in debt up to their necks.-- posted by Hobbes
