» bartonz - Welcome!

Kara --

What you wrote is so true. I have survived breast cancer for 10 years now and I believe that it is mostly because I wrote down my thoughts, fears, anger, sadness and healing in poetry, journal entries and essays. Maybe we'll get together for tea sometime. I live in Bellevue and would be happy to hear your story.

I have the book "Poetic Medicine" and keep meaning to start working my way through it. I'll be following your topic and hopefully start writing again.

I read your article and right away it grabbed me. That's the kind of thing I want to read about. Something I can connect with.

I've always avoided poetry, but when I read something where the passion, grief and intense emotion is so vivid, it moves me.

So glad you found what puts passion into your poetry. The snobs of acedemia are simply missing out.

BTW, welcome to Suite101.

In response to message posted by annej:

What a great topic. I've taught Creative Writing in local schools, and have actually been reprimanded for asking the kids to explore their negative emotions. Too often, we make the assumption that kids don't experience the depths of emotions that adults do. Yet some of these kids have experienced divorce, death, and other forms of loss. With no outlet for their emotions, they turn inward.

Poetry is a great outlet, and the therapy it can provide is invaluable. I know this from my own experience, and I'm going to continue to try to teach this to my students. In the meantime, I'll be coming back to your topic for ideas and support.

» Geistez1 - Poetry has been my therapy...

As a future teacher of tomorrow's children, I understand it is necessary to express emotions. That should be practiced, writing in todays children. Some of the things that most teachers worry about, is that there will be violence in their work. As teachers we should let them express feelings. Almost anything written from there heart is okay. So when I do become a teacher, I am going to recommend using journals in the classroom. As long as their is no "major, horrific" violence, please share it with me.

I have found poetry as my therapy. -Poetry is a wonderful way for me to express all my deep down feelings. Without the power of words, I would still be a basket case.

In response to message posted by Geistez1:

Great to hear from you, Geistez! Indeed many teachers find poetry or bibliotherapy to be very useful in the classroom-- espeically in the form of journaling. If you are in an educational setting to study for becoming a teacher, you might want to ask around about the arts therapy certifications that might be available at your university or campus to compliment your teaching certificate. Looking forward to hearing from you as future articles post-- best to you in your teaching pursuits!

» Geistez1 - Thank you Kara...

Thank you Kara for your wonderful welcome! Usually I have lots and lots of homework and I quickly get on the internet during my evening hours. Seeing your response, meant a great deal to me. Thank you.

I have just begun my journey at the University of Northern Colorado. I will graduate with my bachelor's, 2005; crossing fingers and toes here for that accomplishment. The program that I am in is called: Center for Urban Education. This program that I am in lets me work, maintain my family, and go get my education all in one day. You can say, I am mighty tired by this time.

I am very "new" to Suite 101, I am glad to be part of this wonderful place. Mr. Stoneking referred me here, it took me forever to get to this website. I am glad he told me about it and when I have sometime, I could figure out more about Suite101.com. Okay, I am mighty tired, I shall get some rest now.

Take Care Everyone!
