Hi Thadine,

I've just recently begun to read Billy Collins's poetry, and it's fast becoming a favorite. The July 29th New Yorker includes a funny/somber (Collins seems to mix these tones with finesse) musing about a scorching hot day that flows into a discourse on hell. I'm going to go back and re-read it now with my new knowledge from your perceptive discussion and analysis of his work. Really enjoyed the article!

I, too, am a big fan of Billy Collins, ever since I saw him read at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival back in 2000. I even reviewed his book The Apple That Astonished Paris on my monthly book review web site.

It's too bad that some critics condemn his poetry for being "accessible". Just because it's "accessible" doesn't mean that it's "simple". Collins provides a remarkable amount of insight in his poems.

Hi Bernadette,

I couldn't agree more with your refutation of the critics--accessible, yes, but also inventive and perceptive. God forbid people outside of academia appreciate poetry too...
