» gme2767 - The government, the physicians, addicts and pain

I agree that the heavy handedness of the government is frightening physicians in pain clinic's throughout the country, but I believe that is mainly because those investigators are never controlled. Much like Ken Starr, they are given too much leeway for their attempts to curb abuses - so much so that they, themselves, become abusers.

Where the real problem arises is in the general populace of physicians who practice symptomology medicine. I have seen more addicts, in my capacity as a professional, created by general practitioners and other "specialists" than by pain clinic physicians. Those addictions are not only to narcotics and exempt narcotics, but also to other control drugs and non narcotic products as well. Some of the addictions noted have horrific withdrawl symptoms that rival and surpass those of the narcotic type. Most people who have chronic conditions also have habituations to one or several drug products.

The other part of the problem is that when you give a person an excess of power, that person almost invariably develops a *god* complex. Given to one who has an inferiority complex (either known or latent), disaster is a given.

The question is, how can the pitfalls be overcome? The answer isn't simple, but the problem must be resolved before the quality of medical treatment flows down the porcelin chute and the people hurt the worst will, once again, be the general public.
