I'm not going to see it. A joke isn't a joke unless both people are laughing. I'm not laughing. Shallow Hal is a cheap shot at large women. We don't need more cheap shots we need building up not tearing down.

I must confess to having laughed at the previews for Shallow Hal. Although, I think it was because I found Jack Black funny as opposed to the "fat" jokes. I think Jack's sort of stupidity and the fact that he seems completely unaware is what struck me as funny.

But like you, I have problems with the portrayal of big women as some sort of freaks. I commented to my mother that the character will probably lose all the weight and that will make her loveable, as happens so often in the Hollywood vehicle. (Big men are quite acceptable however--sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. The double standard really irks me!!)

I don't know if I'll see it. A thirty second preview will probably be a lot easier to digest than an entire movie. I couldn't watch Austin Powers II on account of the "Fat Guy." I thought the humour and lack of taste was absolutely despicable. It ruined the entire movie for me.

Great article!! I've just subscribed to your topic!

» Rowdie - Shallow Hal

I'm a person of size. I'm 42 years old, and there has never been a day in that 42 years where society has not rudely reminded me of that fact. I grow weary of always building myself up from the constant tearing down. Society allows a privileged few to determine how the entire rest of the population thinks, dresses, speaks and acts. Who are these people and what gives them the rights to tell society what to think? Has it ever occurred to anyone that when you follow the crowd, you are giving up your human rights to think and decide for yourself? And just for the record, I AM NOT A FREAK, SO THERE SOCIETY!!!

You go, Rowdie One!! Absolutely!

I eagerly await the day when society begins to accept responsibility for its biases and prejudices. Or for the day that the rest of us refuse to put up with bull---t anymore.

We need a few more "rowdie ones" to keep the infamous "they" in line!
