Have you ever been the victim of size discrimination? How did you handle it?

One of my friends who is about the same size as me (size 26) applied to an HMO. A few weeks later she received a reply that they had declined her due to her size. I thought that this was ridiculous, and completely unfair. I think they should have at least taken the time to give her an exam and then determine if she is un-healthy, and if there are health problems then it should be their job to fix them.

I am a size 26 waitress and one night a man came in and cute colleen greeted him at the door and brought him to his table. When I went to the table, he said, "where's the other girl" and I think I said she's not working in this section. He told me that he would leave if she did not serve him.

When he left, I wanted to go out the back door and confront him in the parking lot. And make him say why he did not want me to serve him. I started for the back door but the dishwasher had the huge garbage bin blocking it.

That man hurt my feelings.
Some people just don't know how they affect others.

Hi everyone. I have been big for the last 15 years. I noticed over the course of these years that I have become more and more invisible the bigger I got. People would rather not even acknowledge that I was there than to have to face me. women are the worst, they seem to fear becoming me. Men do not see me as a woman, I am more like one of the guys, if they notice me at all.

I am doing a moral ethic research paper on the invisible women. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on the topic.

Hugs, a kind embrace, if only all of life were so nice.

Have you ever noticed that because you are big, they think that you are also dumb?

I am constantly surprised by the number of people who seem to think I am not too bright because of my size.

Of course, this is nothing to the number of people who say to me "you're so light on your feet and graceful - but you're so big!".

Just the number of stereotypes that abound about larger people (not women specifically) are insulting - and would be the subject of media barrage if they were about anything than size.

I firmly believe that Sizeism is the last acceptable prejudice in society today. How sad.

» born_country20 - In Response to Size Discrimination

I am a big woman, a size 22. I have been overweight my whole life and have always had to deal with criticism, sterotism, and discrimination because of my size. It seemed to start way back even in elementary school. Children were always refusing to play with me because I was larger than they were. I have taken a Basic Nutrition class, and in the class I learned a lot about obesity. We watched a video on obesity. In the video, researchers created a multiple choice question involving a choice of playmate. They asked a class of elementary children to choose the child that they would not want as a playmate. Their choices were a hairless child with cancer, a foreign child, a heavy child, and a down syndrome child. The majority of the class picked the heavy child because the child was fat and could not play like they want to. I think this says a lot about society. Also, the video talked about obese people who are physically fit. They showed a man who was considered obese by doctors but yet he was running marathons and was more physically fit than the doctors examining him. Yet, some would discriminate against him because he is obese. I am sorry that this is so long. I have too many thoughts on this subject to share all at once. I hope to get to post again soon. Thank you for reading this.

I believe all insurance companies decline people who are overweight according to their figures. Last year our family applied for insurance. We were told outright that I would not be able to even apply. They took information on the rest of the family. My 17 year old son who is 6' 3" and weighs 210 was listed as boarderline obese. He is not at all obese. He is not skinny but just a big boy.

You only have to be about 20 pounds overweight to be listed as morbidly obese. Now doesn't a women wearing a size 14, looking good and feeling healthy love to hear she is "moridly obese"?

This is just the tip of the iceberg on discrimination. We need to quit being ashamed of ourselves and make our voices heard in response to these situations.

» erica20 - Lets Be Pals

I recognize what you are saying about guys wanting to be pals. At my work, this guy Rich, is attracted to several of the waitresses. But me, (the big gal) sees right through him, he lets me. He does not act the same with me as he does with them. He treats another waitress the same as me...but she is not fat, but not "pretty"
He will punch me in the sholder...but would never do that in front of the attractive girls. He tells me about his lust etc. He is sexually frustrated and doesn't care if I see it...but not them. He has also told me I am like one of his guy friends.
