I have written a book for playwriting teachers and students on how to write the highlights or turning points of your life story (or your experiences) as a play, skit, or monologue. You can do the same from current events or social issues and history.You can focus on the 45-minute one-act play, or the full length play, or monologue. Younger people can interview older individuals and collect their life story excerpts to make into a play, monologue or skit.
Life stories may be recorded on video and turned into documentaries, then put on DVDs, Web sites, or given to family and friends.
This approach to personal history journalism and genealogy journalism as playwriting also is related to oral histories. Just think of taking your video iPod, camcorder, or recording device, traveling around the world to gather life stories.
Should you apply for a grant or work lower budget by visiting senior citizens' community centers and assisted living apartment complexes to gather personal histories as a recreational course in writing memoirs?
Plays can be gleaned from the life stories of many people or focus on niche topics of interest to particular audiences, from clubs to school drama workshops or creative writing boot camps.
