If you want a point and shoot style digital with good zoom (and stay with only optical zoom...digital zoom is worthless), look at Olympus. The A-1 is supposed to be a good camera.

If you want more flexibility in the future for zoom, you may want to consider a digital SLR like the Canon Digital Rebel (I think it might be the 300D of Kiss Rebel in Australia). This camera body will take all of Canon's line of EOS lenses.

I would suggest going with 5mp and above for magazine work. I know that the freelance group I work with insists on a minimum of 5mp from the photographers who shoot digital.
