» DarkLove - Nose bleed and pin shading
Hi, I must start by saying that this is my first rat. His name his Vlad and his amazing. I was so sad to found out they only live 2-3 yrs. His already 1 1\2 old. Since i've learned the life is soo short, I never let him go.I heard that pin shading is verdangerousus and causes cancer. Is that true. I truly hope notI'veve been using that type of shading since I bought him.
Also, his nose bleeds frequently. He acts really healthy and runs around the house like crazy ( under my supervision of course. )
And last, can I buy a new baby rat and place himVladh Vlad, who is a male, acts like a baby do, but don't all male do. ![]()
Thank you for anyDarkLove

I think you mean pine shaving. And the oil in it can make your rat sick. Stop using that and get some Carefresh. It is like recycled newspaper and stuff. His nose is probibly not bleeding. He probibly has some sinus drip, which is red. It is from his tear ducts. Not dangerous unless he is weezing. DO NOT put a new baby rat in with your other boy. He will probibly kill it right away. If you have to get a new rat, get an older one and keep him in a seprate cage next to the one you have already and let them get to know each other for a while before letting them become cage mates.-- posted by Bindress

In response to message posted by DarkLove:another thing to watch for with regards nose bleeding is if your rat chews at the bars of his gage this can also cause nose bleeds in rats

» Snuggles3164 - Sick Rats
I have raised rats before until they died of old age. Several weeks ago I got a baby rat at our local pet store for my son. This rat was not as lively as I'm used to. Several times I thought he was sneezing, but wasn't sure. 3 weeks later, my son got up one more and the rat was dead. I cleaned out the cage with 10% bleach solution as recommended to me. I called the pet store and they said they had no problems. I suspect he had a respiratory problem when we got him. Long story short. On Monday, I went back to that pet store and this time got my son a "blue rat". He was lively, active, and 2 days later...dead.Any thoughts?
