cHECKED TO SEE IF YOU HAD A REPLY TO YOUR PROBLEM.
It does not appear so. My daughter has a rat that has undergone the same sort of experience in the last 4 days. By rat standards he is old and I thought on its way out. He is eating grapes though as I think that is the best way for him to get sugars and water.
I thought initially that he had been injured...Fall??? Twisted getting caught?? But my daughter says no. So far no worse or better.
Has yours recovered??

» dlynn35 - Sick Rat

I see several postings for rats with a slight red discharge from their nose. My rate also sounds like she has mucus in her nose, with the bloody ting around her nose. I am assuming she has an upper respitory infection. I have called two vets, but they charge from $30-$40 to just walk in the door. They will not give out any antibiotics if I do not bring her in. Does anyone know what type of antibiotics are given to rats with this infection or if there is any other solution for this problem?

BRING HER TO THE VET!!! I do not what it may be but it sounds very serious to me. Make sure you friends rat does not move around alot for this can make the injury more severe. try loosly wrapping a gause around the lower part of the rats back. if your friend has other rats put the hurt rattie in a different cage (if possible) Do not hold the rat for that can hurt the rattie. make sure the rattie has a soft cushiony place to sleep, that she can reach with out going up stairs. Immediate help is needed get her to the vet soon or the injury could/will get worse or even unfixable.
give your friend this advice and the rat may be saved....... if it isnt to late!

In response to Sick Rats posted by Snuggles3164:

Hi Snuggles3164

My name is Rosette. I have 12 rats now. Over the last 2 months I lost 10 because the Pet Store sold me sick rats--upper respiratory disease. I bought them from Petco. Normally Petco is very good but the store across from where I live gets a lot of complaints about how they take care of their animals. I took my sick rats back within the 15 day guarantee and did not have my receipt so they would not service me. $200 later at the Pet Hospital when I took Patch to the vet because of this respiratory problem, he died three hours later. It is very sad that the hospital did not think my rat was important enough to treat him right away. I waited there for 2 hours before they gave him a shot with antibiotics. And after Patch died, three more rats got sick and died even tho I gave them antibiotics. Just be really careful when you buy the rats from the pet store. Make sure they are not sick to begin with.

May I suggest to buy Echinacea at a local vitamin store. It is a tincture and this natural medicine helps rats with the upper respiratory disease. I have been giving this to my Grayble who has not gained an ounce since I bought him six weeks ago. He is now lively and does not have labored breathing anymore. I bought the tincture with no alcohol but there are tinctures with alcohol that are less expensive and I believe the alcohol will not harm the rats. I bought a 2 oz. tincture for $18.47 plus tax. But it sure beats spending an enormous amount of money at the vet where they die anyway. I even took my ferret there last year after he had attacked a toad. The toad was toxic. He was just protecting me. I rushed him to that same animal hospital and they kept him overnight. $600 later he was dead by morning. So, I really do not trust the hospitals anymore. I would rather treat my babies myself to make sure they get cured.

If you do buy the tincture, only give one drop of it per day. Do it for a week then off a week. Do not administer it more than two weeks in a row.

I hope this info helps. If you are like me, I LOVE my rats. And, by the way, my rats are all free. They only go in the cage to eat. I know it sounds crazy, but they love their freedom and they become very close to me because of it. I only have two "wild rats"---they do not like people. But they are free too. And now, all of my babies are quite healthy. It just saddens me that they only live up to 2 1/2 years. I literally watched my old rat die. He fought like heck but finally went away. I have a pet cemetary near my apt. complex---I have buried so many. But I found that when one dies, immediately go out and buy another one. You will feel better and the pain of losing one is not so great.

Hope I have helped. Have a good day.

Bye,

Rosey

Hi Laura,

Just a thought about your little cute rat. I believe that your baby has probably had a stroke. If he does not eat and does not move much, he is probably in pain. I know it is harsh, but you may have to put him down. I had a rat just like that and when I called the animal hospital and relayed what was wrong, they suggested to put him down. I did not. I let him continue to live as long as he could. I could not help it, I loved him so much and did not want to lose him. It is up to you.

I have 12 rats now. After 10 dying over the last two months, I just had to replace them.

If you want, you can try to buy Echinacea (a tincture in 1 or 2 oz sizes) and see if that will help him. Any local vitamin store has it.

Hope this helps.

Rosette

Hi dlynn,

I have been to the pet hospial myself and spent beaucoups bucks to try to get my rats well and they only died. I got a tip thru this website. Buy some echinecea ( it is a tincture in 1 or 2 oz. bottle at any local vitamin store). I have given this to my baby rat who has not gained any weight since I bought him 6 weeks ago and he is doing much better. I have 12 rats, so I learn a lot. 10 have died over the last 2 months because they were sick when I bought them from the pet store.

Hope this helps.

» dancleg - Dying rats

My friend has had 2 rats die in 2 weeks and can't figure out what's wrong with them. I'm hoping someone on here might have some ideas as she can't afford to take her remining rat to the vet. The first one started acting odd, and her head looked like it was swelling. Then she started "bleeding" from her nose. She was having trouble standing, and my friend put her down about a day after she started acting odd. About a week later, a second rat started acting sluggish and had "blood" coming from her nose and eyes. My friend said it looked like dried blood. This one died the same day she seemed sick. I read on here that it may not be blood, but tears/sinuses that she has been seeing, and I'm not sure what she uses for bedding. Any thoughts? Anyone know if the 3rd rat or my friend may be at risk to pick up anything? Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Candi
