when i have to medicate my rats some of them get a little standoffish during the length of treatment but they do not seem to hold a grudge after it is over. just make sure that you spend some time with them not medicating... and a treat after the medicine always warms an icey rattie heart smile you will soon find yourself hopelessly devoted to your rats, and them to you.

Hi!
I find myself dreaming about my little guy's! I love them very much, and never even thought it was possible! They are taking their med's better today. They know they have to so they don't put up such a staunch fight!
After they Charliegets his medicine he gets up on my shoulder and licks behind my ear. It is very sweet. Meeko actually licks my hand and face! I am devoted!
Have a great day!
Cindy.

» Bindress - Respiratory Infection Treatment

Hi Angi.
This is the 8th day of their treatment. Both are now looking forward to getting their medication now! I just stick the dropper in the cage and they drink it out. At first I had to force it in them. I am so happy they are better at it! But Meeko is still sneezing all the time. I guess he will always be that way.

some rats take longer than others to get well, just like some people. I have had rats in the past that have had to go through twice as long a treatment as their cagemates, so if your rat is still really congested you may want to try that. I have also had rats that were sneazy due to dust in their bedding and things like that. You may be okay if its just sneezing but doesnt show other signs of being sick.
I am glad to hear that they are doing better. smile

» alytunder - Pneumonia

My rat, Cookie, has pneumonia. We took her to the vet and got antibiotics for her and she's really showing quite a bit of improvment. My problem is she lost a lot of wait during her illness. Does anyone know of a good rat diet to help her GAIN wait!

» rosey10 - Weight problem

I have had a baby rat for six weeks now named Grayble and he eats okay one day and then not much the next day. He has NOT gained any weight since I bought him that long ago. Some days he is active and others he just stays in one place and has labored breathing. Other rats I have had did die from upper respiratory disease (they already had it when I bought them from Petco, so I now he does not have this problem. Can you tell me what problem Grayble may have and how to treat it? I have been giving him some antibiotics I got from a Vet who treated one of my sick rats with respiratory disease (who died anyway) but I am not sure it is helping him. Please help me---I do not want to see one more rat die (I already lost 10 over the last two months).

Thank you.

Hi Erica,

I am a rat lover and have been ever since I was 4 yrs. old and have had many. Also I am a lover of ferrets. Right now I have 9 rats and one of them, Grayble, is so little. I bought him 6 weeks ago and he has not gained any weight since then. He eats regularly, but sometimes he is very lethargic and has labored breathing. I know it is not upper respiratory disease as I have experienced 10 rats over the last two months with it and die even after taking them to the hospital.

Would you might know what my little Grayble is suffering from? The only other thing I can think of would be pneumonia but he is really not sick, sick. I have been giving him antibiotics (from hospital) and just bought Echinacea for him and all the others just in case.

If you know, please let me know.

Thanks,

Rosey

I have also had rats for a very long time. What I have come to find out is that it is difficult to tell if your rat has pneumonia. I agree, rats are very prone to upperespitoryry infections and you can always tell when they have onbecauseue they are constantly sniffling, sneezing, and wheezing. When they have pneumonia (my babies just got over a case of that themselves) they are very lethargic. It sounds to me as though your rat has pneumonia.

What I prefer, and my rats prefer, for antibioticsAmoxicilianlian. They love it because it tastes lbubblegumegum. I would definitely recommend that.

Also, not sure when you got the antibiotics you are using now but make sure they are not expired. They only have a shelf life of about 2-3 weeks after they have been constituted (mixed with water from powder form).

I hope this helps. I will be praying for your baby boy. If the antibiotics do NOT help then you may have a bug going around your house. Good Luck. Keep us posted!!!

» yol_chields - is that regular?

i just bought two pet rats from a local pet store. ive never had rats before. when i bought them, i was told that both were male. now, im starting to realize that might not be the case. theyre both babies still, theyre not too little but theyre definately not full grown and i can tell one has testicles and the other doesnt. im not sure if maybe the one without still could be growing them, but hes so difficult to pick up. hes smaller than the other one and quicker. i dont know if he has yet to develop or if it is in fact a female. if its a female i would need to seperate them or get rid of one, but at this point i dont think i could. ive become so attatched. =/
