» Chessie58 - Rats and Cats!

Hi everyone!
I have an eight month old rat called Sammie and am thinking of taking on my cousin's eight week old kitten, Smokie. Ok, i know that cats and rats don't get on usually but do you think it would be ok to get Smokie or is it something that i shouldn't even consider and should say no straight away?
I really need to know as soon as poss 'cos i need to tell my cousin pretty quickly if i can have Smokie or not!
thanks a lot!
- Lizzie

In response to message posted by Chessie58:

I run a rescue in scotland and have rehomed rats to already cat owners. Unfortunately due to the genetically inherited nature of a cat, they will always have the hunting instinct, hence, my new rules of not rehoming any rats to cat owners. Have had more than 2 occasions where the usually docile? laid back nature of the cat has resulted in the death and the horrific injury inflicted on the newly rehomed rat. Kittens are of a playful nature and unless you can be 100 per cent careful in closing doors to the ratty friend, your cat may well get access to your furry friend. in short, I wouldn't. Although i believe their are rat and cat owners. Your choice I'm afraid.

Ratty hugs

Donna

p.s. the rat would smell the kitten/cat also. Is it really worth your furry friend living in fear?

I have two rats, a cat, and a large dog. The dog is actually more interested than the cat. I have had no problems, but i would make sure you cage is secure and never leave rats alone with any other animal. If you are just careful, I think you should be ok.
