» rahunter_nf - Avast! Nice article, Thomas. Welcome to Suite101.com.A really great alternative I've found to these is AVG. It is made by Grisoft. The advantage to AVG is that there is a freeware version available. In addition, their database is free for downloading. I've been using it for over a year now and I've never had a virus attack, and it has identified several viruses and eliminated them. I use ALWIL Software's Free avast! 4 Home Edition. From what you've heard or read about it, how does it compare with AVG? -- posted by rahunter_nf » tlw1mac - Re: Avast! In response to Avast! posted by rahunter_nf:OK I've read over the information for the package you mention. Overall, it seems to be very similar to AVG. Here's the only real difference I could find. AVG does not require you re-register after one year. I've had mine for couple of years now and I only had to re-register after I upgraded to their version 7 software. The other thing was there really was no need to get a key to unlock AVG. I'm not saying these are bad things, if anything a minor annoyance. Which when you factor in, it is free may be perfectly acceptable. -- posted by tlw1mac » rahunter_nf - Re: Re: Avast! In response to Re: Avast! posted by tlw1mac:Thanks for checking for me, Thomas. My searching for online comparisons of Avast! and AVG led to mixed results. Thus I'll continue using Avast! but keep AVG in mind. Best wishes with Personal Computer Security. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. -- posted by rahunter_nf » Tina_Coruth - Re: Re: Re: Avast! In response to Re: Re: Avast! posted by rahunter_nf:This is a much needed topic! I started this when I got into computer security. One of the glaring things I noticed was that there was all sorts of information on how to keep your corporate systems secure, but almost nothing for the personal computer. Just run an anti-virus program and set up a firewall. I thought with what I've learned that I could translate it down to the average user. Needless to say some things won't translate well, but it certainly is better than we have now. Tom -- posted by tlw1mac
