Dear Sir or to whom it may concern,

Del Marbrook's "The Ring of al-Andalus", pub. May
15, 2004, here, was a rather fine piece of wordsmanship.
His prose is much like Lorca's poetry. I think he honors the vision of the Andalusian Arabs time in al-Andalus, yes, there was/is a vision there. The Andalusians once said "...our golden island".

Cordially,

Michael A. Bender

Dear Mr. Bender:

Your gracious note about my Ring Songs essay was posted on my birthday, but I didn't notice it right away. Thank you.
I wonder if you've read Maria Rosa Menocal's The Ornament of the World? It's about that Golden Island you mention. As I remember, she writes of the poetry competitions between Bedouin tribes. They mounted their poems on great colored banners and staged panoramic festivals. I thought of that recently when I read about a somewhat similar event in Dubai.
Wouldn't it be marvelous if we could wage our battles with bravura bursts of calligraphy and song? So much better than the tedious talking heads repeating themselves and rudely interrupting each other.

Warm regards,

Del Marbrook
