I have been told to pull out the dead flower and stem at the root after blooming to facilitate new growth. Is this correct?

In response to your question, I am assuming you are talking about Altroemerias. I have these growing in my garden (Sweet Laura) and have grown them before in a hothouse situation (aurantica varieties and cultivars). I've found the garden types to be quite shallow-rooted and therefore pulling up stems is not conducive to subsequent growth. ie: you end up pulling up the whole plant. In the hothouse I would recommend it. If cut at anything above 1 foot off the ground (and they can get extremely long-stemmed) the stems will become standing debris, attracting mites etc...

If on the other hand your garden plants become rugged enough to stand this kind of pulling, go for it. It's easier and cleaner for the plants in the long run.

I hope this helps - Jojo
