» dege6 - hardware problem

I just installed a new hardrive. However it created a new drive letter for it, D:. Is there any way to combine my original hardrive with the new one under the same letter name, C:.

» C_Cruickshank - Creating 1 logical drive from 2 physical drives

Hi!,

Yes you CAN create a single logical drive from two physical drives so, for example, if you had two hard drives - a 10GB and 4GB you could create a single 14GB hard disk providing that they are IDE drives (as opposed to SCSI).

However, you DO run the risk of doubling the potential problems with doing this. Let me explain...

By combining the 2 drives, if either physical drive gets an error that requires a reformat, then you have lost EVERYTHING! Keeping them separate means that if 1 drive fails, the other can still work.

I would suggest one of the following to you instead - depending the size of the 2 drives you have...

If 1 is tiny (up to 1GB), keep this as a separate drive and let Windows use it wholly for the purpose of its swap file. That is - assign it as the drive for the Windows swap file and do NOT place ANY files on it. Your machine will gain in performance by having an exclusive swap drive. Your data and drive C: would be the other drive.

If they are of about equal size but smallish (perhaps between 1 - 2GB each), then partition 1 drive to 1GB for the swap file, keep the rest as for data. The other disk can then be your main drive. For example - if you had 2 x 2GB disks. Partition 1 drive to 2 x 1 GB and leave the other at 2GB. The 2GB would be drive C:, the others D: and E:. Set either D: or E: to be the swap file and keep data on the other 1GB drive.

If you have 2 good sized hard disks (4GB upwards), then split 1 into 1GB (swap file) and have the rest for data and programs. Format the 2nd hard disk to be as big as possible and have that as your main drive (Csmile

I hope this makes sense - look out next week as I will write an article about disk sizing and the things you can do and should think about.

As I mentioned earlier - I wouldn't advise joining 2 physical drives together - but it can be done.

Phew!

» randimus - modem troubles.

I have this friend who uses win95 who can't get his modem to connect. I went over, ran modem diagnostics and it said that it "cannot communicate with modem, make sure it is plugged in or turn it off". The phone line is fine. I switched the modem to a different ISA slot, same problem. There are no conficts in the device manager. On the surface everything appears to be fine. I unisntalled the modem and put in a known working one and its still the same problem.

I uninstalled and reinstalled dialup networking.

Sometimes it will occasionally connect to the phone line, sometimes it won't. It appears that after you hang up, you have to wait a couple of minutes before your able to connect again.

If anyone has any soutions to this problem I will greatly appreciate it, because I'm frustrated to the point of shunning technology and becoming amish. ; )

» phillipkeen - Re: modem troubles.

In response to message posted by randimus:

Win95 was very notorious with such problems with the modem. I helped for quite some time at a small computer shop here in town. A big part of my job was to get Windows setup and running on new computer systems. At the time I was the helper, Windows95 was the primary OS. More than likely it has something to do with the Interrupt Request, COM Port # and jumper setting you are using. Usually your mouse is on COM1:. So lots of times Win95 if your modem was set for COM3: would generate problems. The best thing to do is to change the COM port to a different COM port. In most cases, this will involve a little bit of hardware work. You will need to physically power down your system, take apart the case, take out the card your modem is in and change the little jumper. After you make the hardware change, make a note of the new settings in paper and set up Win95 appropriately. Win95 does not always detect changes in the settings. Microsoft primarily fixed the problem with Win98 and Win98SE as they realized that there were other things interfering with the modem. With true plug and play capabilities in Win98 it is able to fix many more problems than what Win95 was capable of doing. Personally, I suggest if your machine can handle it, go ahead and upgrade to Win98. I do understand though that some older systems cannot handle Win98 very well. I hope and pray that this helps.
