I hate the emphasis on winning at a time when it should just be fun. Last year, our community center had sports classes-no competition, just skills and scrimages. It was perfect. When they turn twelve, my kids play in our church league. My older daughter is an athlete, but my younger one isn't. At first she was afraid to play, but the program was set up for kids who aren't good enough for other programs-varsity players can't participate at tournament level. She got out there, got plenty of playing time even though she's not especially good, and loves it. No one ever makes fun of her or complains a better player should get the time. I wish there were more opportunities for non-athletes to love sports.-- posted by Terrie_Bittner
