» MamaGaia - Separating Twins

Our school has a policy that all twins be separated ,so when my twins were slated to begin kindergarten, I almost considered homeschooling. It just didn't feel right to have them in separate classes, at least for that first year. Not only would it be the first time away from home and me(they've been home with me since I stoipped working when they were 5 months old), but apart from each other as well. I just felt it was too much of a transition. I asked the girls' what they thought and they both wanted to stay together. It was a battle but I managed to convince the school to keep them together for at least kindergarten. They've both grown as individuals and have forged friendships of their own, but they have the security of having each other close at hand. I don't regret keeping them together one bit!

Ani: I am so glad to hear about Mom's who fight for what they know is best for their twins. It's important that we not let anyone tell us what is best for our twins - we know what is best and noone else. I'm glad you asked your girls their opinion - that's important too! Perhaps you will have been instrumental in getting a rule changed - way to go! Keep up the good work. I love hearing from people who read my articles and getting feedback. Thanks so much for writing.

Hi, At our school (a private Montessori) the kids and their parents choose whether or not to use separate classes.

A mom at our school has three sets of twins and a singleton. She has the two oldest in together since age 3 and they are now 9 years old. They seem just fine.

How can a school make a blanket choice for all multiples? Would all adopted kids have to be in a class only for adoptees? Seems odd to me.

I agree, I never did understand schools making choices for parents. Of course, lumping adopted kids into a category on their own is nothing close to putting twins in their own category - they two have nothing in common. Twins are in their own category, because of the unusual bond twins have with each other. Adopted kids are no different from other kids, when it comes to being in a classroom. Separating your twins is a very hard decision and is one that only parents of those twins can make.

» mzvaughn - separating them in kindergarten

I put my boy/girl twins in preschool together and planned to keep them together in Kindergarten. We moved here to Spokane from California and got them into a great school in the Mead district and when I went to register them for class, I was told that I had a choice but that most parents of twins separated them. I decided to wait and think about it. My son has always been pretty dependant on my daughter. I decided to split them up to see if that helped because I felt bad for him not really making his own friends and I felt bad for her because she always had that pressure of including him. I have to say now, 4 months into the year, it was a lot harder for me than for them. They are both doing great! My son has made his own friends and loves school. My daughter, free to do her own thing is doing good but, not surprisingly I guess, has ended up befriending a very dependant girl and so I'm trying to teach her to branch out. Anyway, that's been our experience.

I found that to be true too - always harder on the parents no matter what we think the kids are going to think. Hey, we live in Spokane too and are in the Mead School Dist. - maybe we are neighbors???

Glad things worked out for you.
