» jerrib - Unfortunately, kids do not always like healthy snacks. With such voracious appetites, I imagine it is difficult to keep them full! I have a grandson who is 14 and is suddenly a big eater.Lots of fruit around is a good thing. My husband eats a lot more than I and loves his apples, bananas, pears, oranges, grapes, etc. -- posted by jerrib » Barbara Bell - Re: Unfortunately, In response to Unfortunately, posted by jerrib:Having raised four boys, one thing I would caution you about, Carrie, is the prospect of type 2 diabetes, which is appearing at earlier ages than in generations past, and especially hitting young teenage boys. As a precaution, try to provide as many sugar-free snacks and low-carb snacks as you can. It is the simple sugars and starches that elevate blood sugars. Teenage metabolisms are still in flux. Hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, sugar-and-caffeine-free drinks, healthy sandwich fillings, natural (no sugar added) peanut butter, raw veggies - with a fat-free salad dressing to dip them in - would be good places to start. If you introduce these now (and set a good example) they might learn to appreciate these substitutes for chips and sodas. I spent my teenage years drinking skim milk and Diet Rite soda and thought of myself as a martyr...no one made me think this was cool! I just felt weird! So many things today are geared towards a much healthier outlook on eating right and having a positive self-image. Make sure they like to exercise and use up those calories - in fun ways - and they will not only be taller than you but happy and healthy too. -- posted by Barbara Bell » feistyfemale56 - Healthy eating is a challenge for all age groups But I know especially so with teenagers who have so much peer pressure besides an enormous appetite. As someone who is trying to make her own eating lifestyle healthier, I can tell you that popcorn is one "salvation" food for me. Air popped or the lowfat variety of microwave popcorn gets rid of a good bit of the fat/grease associated with popcorn, and then I use one of the spray butters to add some flavor but no calories. People are flavoring popcorn in all sorts of ways these days, and I bet if you let those growing fellas experiement, they will find ways to eat it that they enjoy--and it is really satisfying both to your mouth (chewing) and filling up tummies. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do great. -- posted by feistyfemale56
