» ant28 - Downs Syndrome This is the first time that I have visited this site and I will be returning. About two months ago I started to work in a home for adults with Downs Syndrome. What I did not realise is that they are all not the same!! They have different syndromes and this site is the first that actually helped me to try to understand their syndromes. I have never heard of Prada Willi, Smith Magenis and now that I have started to read, I realise how much I can try to help them just by understanding how others cope and learn. If anyone can help me with any infomation that could be relevant it would be gratefully received.-- posted by ant28 » Star85girl - People in all communities I know lots of people with Down Syndrome. One used to live in my neighborhood when I was a child, and we hung out all the time. I work with a man who has Down Syndrome now. No one bothers these people anymore or any less than they bother other people, at least in my experience. Also, in my opinion, the people who make comments on your child just because she has Down Syndrome are not "perfectly intelligent." They are a whole lot stupider than they think they are, and they need to come off it and realize what ignorant, stupid people they are. It's so much worse to have every "normal" capability in your hands and refuse to use them than to have to struggle for everything you do but make such greater accomplishments. I hope your daughter continues to succeed in everything she attemtps, and that people realize that she's different, but not bad. Different is good.-- posted by Star85girl » kmalone318 - mother of seven (one has down syndrome) To all you special moms out there who have been lucky enough to give birth to a down syndrome child, congratulation!!!!Timmy is now 21 - he will be 22 on his next birthday. To be perfectly honest, it took me about three years to totally accept my son. I was prejudiced and it took me three years to get over it. Timmy has run around from home many times - he thought it was so funny to escape and have me tearing after him - I lost him in a store once, I lost him at the beach once (Coney Island - a very hot and crowded day and I had two younger siblings with me) I had to leave the younger children with total strangers to go look for him - he was missing for three hours when the police finally returned him to me - I got quite a few grey hairs that day - another morning he got out after his older brother came home in the middle of the night with a friend and the friend left the house in the morning and left the front door open - the police brTimmy timmy home to be before I even knew he was missing - I could go on and on - Timmy is just one of my children - but I can tell you he is not the biggest concern of mine - I am more concerned about two of my other perfectly healthy adult children - so it just goes to show you how much we all know. Timmy has more common sense than most of the other guys in the house. New mothers, relax and open your eyes to the sweetest babies in the world. They are special and you have been blessed. Take it from me - I was prejudiced too. -- posted by kmalone318
