» emys - Cope Biography

Hey Beverly,

Great article on Cope, who is indeed one of my all time favorites in the history of science. I do think, however, that many would be interested to know that E.D Cope also worked extensively with living animals as well particularly reptiles, amphibians and fish. In fact, his work with these extant organisms was so extensive (reputedly producing nearly 1000 papers and at least 2 substantially more extensive publications on amphibians and reptiles during his career)that the journal of the American Society of Ichthyologists (fish scientists) and Herpetologists (amphibian and reptile scientists) is called Copeia in honor of his numerous early contributions. Of course, this is all the more reason to prefer him over O.C. Marsh as well. Anyway, thanks again for your very informative and entertaining web pages on Paleontology. John P. Levell
