» RevNancyLeigh - Candles
Hi Myrrha,When I was studying Wiccan, I read somewhere that to put out the fire of the candle when through you should douse it with your fingers, no blow it out. I picked up this habit and never stopped doing that since (there are actually several things I do still that I learned during my studies, like thanking the earth when you pick a flower, etc.). I do not remember WHY to douse the candle that way...was it an insult to fire to use air to extinguish the flame? Any thoughts?
Blessings,

In some Wikkan trads the belief is strong that blowing out the candle can offend the fire elementals. The use of one manifestation of an elemental to extinguish another manifestation of an elemental is creates ill feelings between you and them.Thanking the earth when we take from it can be done in so many ways like pitching a handful of bird sead or composting or strewing wild flower seed, many things can be done to do this. When we thank someone who has done us a kindness it is usually thought to lend weight to the expression of gratitude if we back it up with action.
Later,
Myrrha
